action

Mike Wayne is a middle-aged film producer whose career has stalled. He tries everything to land a new Hollywood project. He is used to a lavish lifestyle and spoils his daughter January. He finances her an expensive education in Europe and everything that money can get. January adores her father and returns to America to be with him again.

Mike is in dire need of money and therefore enters a loveless marriage to Deidre Milford Granger, one of the richest women in the world. She has been through multiple marriages and demands that things be done according to her will. She's also having a secret lesbian affair. January is devastated to learn that Mike is now married to this impossible woman. Deidre tries to pair January with her cousin David Milford, a womanizer. Eventually David ends up in bed with January and finds out that she is still a virgin.

January doesn't know what to do with her life. Linda Riggs, an old friend and magazine editor, advises her to write a book. Linda enjoys a free spirited life with many lovers and encourages January to follow suit. Because of her father complex, January falls in love with the much older Tom Colt, a hard-drinking, impotent writer who is her father's competitor. Mike is bitterly angry about the matter. He beats Colt when he catches January with him in a hotel bungalow in Beverly Hills. Mike presents his daughter with a choice between him and Colt.

Mike wants to get a divorce because Deidre's demands and insults are too much for him. She agrees. Later both of them die in a plane crash. The devastated January wants to be comforted by Tom Colt. But this turns away.
