Population development in Plauen
The population development in the city of Plauen in Vogtland is shown in tables and graphs.
Population development
Plauen had only a few hundred inhabitants in the Middle Ages and only a few thousand in the early modern period . The population increased only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. In 1430, a large part of the city was burned down by the Hussites . When the plague broke out in 1566, over a quarter of the residents died. In the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) the population fell significantly as a result of the looting and pillage. When the plague broke out again in 1633, over half of the residents died.
It was not until industrialization in the 19th century that population growth accelerated. While only 5,700 people lived in the city in 1801, in 1904 the population of Plauen exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city . In 1912 the population reached its historic high of 128,000 due to the economic boom. During the First World War , the population fell well below 100,000, but quickly recovered to well above this mark after the end of the war.
Plauen did not become a major city after the Second World War .
After that, the population remained relatively stable at around 80,000 for almost three decades. With the beginning of the wave of refugees from GDR citizens after the opening of the Iron Curtain between Austria and Hungary on August 19, 1989, the population began to decline again. Due to the rather weak economic situation, this development continued during the 1990s and 2000s, although the number of inhabitants has been increased again in the meantime through incorporation. Since 2010, however, the number of immigrants has exceeded the number of immigrants, which is why the population is only shrinking due to the excess deaths. On March 31, 2007, the “ official number of inhabitants ” for Plauen was 68,285 according to the state statistical office of the Free State of Saxony (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1831 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates from the city administration (until 1944), the state central administration for statistics (1945 to 1989) and the state statistical office (from 1990). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1966 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
