Ice-cold Bommerlunder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder (original title: Bommerlunder ) is a drinking song by the band Die Toten Hosen , who first released the title in 1983 as a single on their own record label Totenkopf .

The melody comes from the first part of the samba piece Chiu Chiu , which the Chilean Nicanor Molinare composed in 1937. In the 1950s, a journey song with the title Eisgekühlte Coca-Cola developed from this , which Die Toten Hosen used as a template. The idea to make the caraway brandy Bommerlunder the subject of the song came from Trini Trimpop , the band's drummer at the time.

History of origin

Third single Bommerlunder

In the fall of 1982 Die Toten Hosen went on tour for the first time. At that time you could count on an audience of 300 people for a hip punk evening .

"[...] mixed Die Toten Hosen the energy of punk with brute lumber rock and songs that on the stands of the Düsseldorf as well Fortuna -Stadions could have come from. They had one thing in common with the early punk bands: The joy of playing and having fun at a wild party were more important than clever chord changes and cleanly played solos. "

In this scenario, Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder was created , which the band released in the summer of 1983, together with the title Opel-Gang (later included on the debut album of the same name ) and Army of Losers on the B-side, when their third single was self-distributed. A sample bottle of Bommerlunder was included with the original singles.

Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder was broadcast for the first time on the radio at Radio3 in Stuttgart, where the previous band of the Toten Hosen - ZK - was known because radio presenter Stefan Siller had already organized a punk concert with ZK in Stuttgart in 1980. Ice-cold Bommerlunder stayed in first place for several weeks in 1983 in the listener's hit parade of the 3rd radio program of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk .

At the same time, the EMI became aware of the title “Die Toten Hosen”. The band signed a contract with the record company on July 1, 1983, which advanced 50,000 DM for a video of Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder . Director Wolfgang Büld shot in the St. Willibald church in Jesenwang near Fürstenfeldbruck . A punk wedding was played in which Kurt Raab can be seen in the role of a Catholic priest and Marianne Sägebrecht as the bride. The video contained various obscene allusions and was not broadcast by the public television channels. The church was new after the announcement of the shoot ordained . Nevertheless, the band was given the opportunity to make a live appearance on German television, which resulted in an unusual and previously unplanned performance of the title Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder . On October 1, 1983, Die Toten Hosen played in the Berlin Tempodrom , then continued partying with some of the fans and accepted the invitation to the Formula One music show on the following day with them . There they pushed through their idea of leaving the stage show to the punks, some of them only 15 years old. The band itself stayed in the audience.

Under the title Hip-Hop-Bommi-Bop , a hip-hop version of the song was created in the EMI studios in collaboration with Fab 5 Freddy , which appeared in duplicate on a single in December 1983. The musicians call themselves on the 12 ″ single "The Incredible TH Scratchers" starring: "Freddy Love". The titles are 4 minutes 25 seconds and 6 minutes 47 seconds long and contain a longer English text that Freddy speaks rhythmically. He is accompanied by percussion instruments and electric guitars. The scratch noises common in this genre are imitated by the musicians with their voices. A melody can no longer be recognized. The production is considered the first publication in the world to combine the styles of rock and hip-hop . A remix of it can be heard on the double album Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück , which reached number one in the German album charts in 1990 . A video on Hip-Hop-Bommi-Bop shows the musicians as breakdancing cannibals in bast skirts.

Single Zamrożona Wyborowa in clear vinyl

Since the band Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder has played at almost every of their concerts so far, there are numerous releases in different versions, on live albums, videos and DVDs. The first live version appeared on the album Bis zum bitter Ende . A quiet acoustic lounge version , arranged by Hans Steingen , in which Campino leans towards Dean Martin in the manner of the lecture , contains the concert album Nur zu Visiting from the MTV Unplugged series , recorded at the Burgtheater in Vienna . The album reached the top 10 of the German, Austrian and Swiss charts.

For the film Hochzeitspolka of Lars Jessen Die Toten Hosen played a version of Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder one in Polish. In the text by Przemysław Nowakowski, Wyborowa vodka is mentioned, as well as Polish liver and meat sausage. The music video for Zamrożona Wyborowa was first presented on September 10, 2010 on the band's official website.

Text and melody

The melody was composed by Nicanor Molinare in 1937 for the hit Chiu Chiu . The original text is about the morning chirping of a morning hammer . The piece of music is part of the soundtrack of the 1943 Oscar- nominated music film You Were Never Lovelier (German title: You were never enchanting ; German premiere on July 8, 1949) with Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth in the leading roles. In the film version it is sung by Lina Romay , who is accompanied by Xavier Cugat and his orchestra.

From the first lines of the world-famous melody by Chiu Chiu , a German song titled Eisgekühlte Coca-Cola , which was often sung on school trips and is now in school books , was created under the backfish of the 1950s, according to an advertising slogan of the Coca-Cola company Has moved in. Die Toten Hosen exchanged the caffeinated lemonade this song was about for the alcoholic drink "Bommerlunder" and the following text was created:

Ice-cold Bommerlunder, Bommerlunder ice-cold; ice-cold Bommerlunder, ice-cold Bommerlunder and a sandwich with ham, a sandwich with egg. That’s two sandwiches, one with ham and one with an egg. "

The track, which lasts almost three minutes in total, begins with a short intro by an acoustic guitar. A group of people can be heard in the background talking lively. Andreas von Holst begins to sing the few lines of text that he repeats over and over again. One after the other, drums, electric bass, and electric guitars kick in, and other people join in on the song. The music is getting louder and faster. After the connection "and to ..." the key moves up a semitone with each repetition of the text . During the last 30 seconds of the song, the tape speed is gradually increased to about one and a half times, so that the music is alienated and the text becomes incomprehensible.

The participating musicians for the first release are Campino , Michael Breitkopf , Andreas Meurer , Andreas von Holst and Trini Trimpop.

The live performances of the song work according to the call-and-response principle, in which the lead singer , mostly Andreas von Holst, gives the text: “A sandwich with ham” and the audience with “ham” or “ A sandwich with egg ”answers with“ egg ”.

The unplugged version , which was recorded during the event in the Vienna Burgtheater , deviates from this approach. The song was converted for this as a bar jazz number that Campino performs. He only sings the line of text twice, plays kazoo and in between introduces the participating musicians on their instruments. He is accompanied on the piano by Esther Kim , Raphael Zweifel on the cello, Andreas von Holst, Michael Breitkopf and Andreas Meurer on the guitars and Vom Ritchie on the drums.

resonance

Bommerlunder was the prelude to a series of musically simple drinking songs that the band brought out in the course of their history. This includes the song Bis zum bitteren Ende , the title of which the band has written on their logo. The song was also released in different versions and is still part of their concerts today.

Die Toten Hosen were widely criticized in the press for their party songs. Wiglaf Droste mentioned this, for example, in an article in the satirical magazine Titanic from 1990 with the headline: When Jusos babble: Campino a dead pair , a "Bundeswehr locker-calibrated humor that smells like beer farts and a group of men".

Nevertheless, the songs made a significant contribution to the success of the band, which to this day regards each of their concerts as a "party". The band also plays the title Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder at the events of their current tour mood of the Natour 2018 . Die Toten Hosen have received numerous awards as an excellent live band, most recently with the Echo 2014 . In 1992, music journalist Jürgen Seibold described Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder as "the hymn of the Düsseldorf band, [...] a funny hybrid of binge drinking and punk rock, which today is probably one of the most popular German-language songs of all" and writes Hollow Skai , Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder and above all the accompanying video would "correspond to the sense of the pants for subversive slapstick".
