As in the previous season , the Regionalliga Süd was organized by the DEB , while the corresponding league level in the north was organized by the regional associations there.

Before the season, the following happened in the Regionalliga Süd:

• The team of Jungadler Mannheim was regrouped from the Oberliga Nord in this league. The originally intended participation in the Oberliga Süd was not made possible for the team.
• Due to the dissolution of EV Landsberg eV and the re-establishment of EV Landsberg 2000 with a new start in the lowest division of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association - here the Bavarian District League - the originally relegated team from ESC Dorfen moved back into the Regional League.

Regional league south

After the preliminary round, which was played as a double round, the participants in places 1 to 4 took part in the promotion play-offs against the participants in places 9 to 12 of the Oberliga Süd 2000/01, but where no team could prevail. The participants in places 5 to 12 took part in the play-downs.

Amberg and Dorfen are thus athletically qualified for the Regionalliga Süd.

Round 3

• Jungadler Mannheim - Augsburg EV 2: 1 (5: 3, 3: 6, 4: 0)

After the play-downs were over, the Augsburg EV team would have been relegated to the leagues of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association - here the Bayern League.

In the promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd, the Höchstadter EC - at the same time champions of the Bayernliga - prevailed thanks to the better direct comparison against the Baden-Württemberg representative Stuttgart Wizards and rose to the Regionalliga Süd in 2001/02 . Other participants in the round were from the Bayern League of ERC Sonthofen and from the Saxon ice sports band of ESC Saaleteufel Halle for the non-eligible ES Weisswasser 1b and ETC Crimmitschau 1b.

Regionalliga North

Modes

• The Regionalliga Nordrhein-Westfalen played a preliminary round with 12 teams as a single round, after which the best three teams qualified for the joint final round. The team from SC Mittelrhein-Neuwied also took part in the league as a visiting team.
• The Regionalliga Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate played a single round in two preliminary round groups, West and East, each with 5 teams, after which the champions from the West group qualified for the joint final and the runner-up from the East group was ready for the joint final to participate.
• The Regionalliga Nord-Ost played a preliminary round with 12 teams as a single round, after which the best three teams qualified for the joint final.
• The final round was played as a single round, after which the best team had athletically qualified for the Oberliga Nord 2001/02 .

Regionalliga North Rhine-Westphalia

The SC Mittelrhein Neuwied took part in the league as a visiting team and played in the regional league Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate at the same time.

Regional league Hessen / Rhineland-Palatinate

The regional league jointly organized by the associations from Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate was played in a group west and in a group east. In Group West, the team from HC Tornado Luxembourg took part as a visiting team.
