Elisabeth of Bavaria (1443–1484)
Elisabeth of Bavaria (born February 2, 1443 in Munich , † March 5, 1484 in Leipzig ) was a princess of Bavaria-Munich and was elector of Saxony by marriage .
Life
Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Albrecht the Pious of Bavaria (1401–1460) from his marriage to Anna (1420–1474), daughter of Duke Erich I of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen .
On November 25, 1460, she married the future Elector Ernst of Saxony (1441–1486) in Leipzig . The engagement took place ten years earlier and, according to the marriage agreement, the marriage should have taken place as early as 1456. From 1468 the residential palace in Dresden was rebuilt for the common keeping of court and the old castle was built on the Meißner Burgberg from 1471 by a new palace building, later called Albrechtsburg . Elisabeth showed herself to be largely responsible for the careful upbringing of her children and, above all, their scientific training. The marriage of the elector couple was considered happy and Ernst loved his wife dearly.
The Electress, who is considered the ancestral mother of the Ernestine house, died at the age of 41 after a long illness. Recently she has been bedridden and a bed with wheels and a hoist has been used for her care. Elisabeth died almost simultaneously with her son Adalbert and her mother-in-law Margarete . Ernst followed his wife into death in August 1486. Elisabeth's son Friedrich the Wise is said to have reported to Spalatin that he rode from one funeral to the next. She was buried in the University Church of St. Pauli in Leipzig.
