The Elbow ( Sölring : Alemböög ) is the northernmost part of the North Frisian island of Sylt , which belongs to Schleswig-Holstein . The northernmost state office in Germany is also located here .

geography

location

The elbow is the northernmost part of Sylt north of List , the northernmost town in Germany. Because of this, List is a member of the Zipfelbund . It juts out into the North Sea as a 330 to 1200 meter wide and elongated peninsula . Just under four kilometers northeast of the Elbow is the Danish neighboring island of Rømø , beyond Lister Tief .

The northernmost point of the peninsula, which is located on the west elbow northeast of the List West lighthouse , represents the northernmost point in Germany. However, since 2013 the DT 22 wind turbine in the DanTysk offshore wind farm has formed the northernmost point of land in Germany . In contrast, Rickelsbüller Koog , which is located on the northwest coast of Schleswig-Holstein, is the state's northernmost mainland point. The eastern end of the peninsula is called the Elbow Point (Alembögspünt) .

Natural allocation

According to the structure of the main natural spatial units of Germany , the Ellenbogen peninsula, like the island of Sylt, belongs to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea, islands and halligen in the Schleswig-Holstein Marshes group of the German Bight main unit .

Surveys

The elevations on the elbow consist of dunes on which, among other things, heather grow. The highest of these is the 27.9  m high Elbow Mountain , which is located in the southwest of the peninsula in the transition area to Listland ; according to other information, this elevation is only 26.1  m above sea level NHN high, which can also stand for the altitude of a viewpoint near the summit. A little further north of this is another 26.1  m high point. To the north, the landscape leads over an isthmus to the actual peninsula. The highest point on the West Elbow is near the List West lighthouse at 16.9  m and the one on the Ostellenbogen near the List Ost lighthouse at 15.3  m .

Protected areas

On almost the entire area of the elbow - as well as in the south of the peninsula and the western of List Sylt part Listland  - are part of the nature reserve (NSG) North Sylt and also parts of the bird sanctuary (LSG) Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and adjacent coastal areas , the was designated according to the Ramsar Convention for wetlands and belongs to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area (FFH) dune and heathland landscapes of North Sylt .

The Königshafen , a mudflat that forms part of the protection zone I of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park , the Wadden Sea NSG north of the Hindenburg dam, the VSG mentioned above and the FFH area of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and adjacent coastal areas, extends between the Elbow and the Lister Hafen counts. This is where the Uthörn bird protection island is located , which cannot be entered.

history

Before the First World War , the Elbogen bird sanctuary was looked after by the Jordsand Association. In 1912 Jens Wand Vogelwart was on the elbow.

During the First and Second World Wars , the military expanded the route network of the Sylt Island Railway to the elbow. Tracks were laid over a length of around 6 km to connect the often very remote camps and gun emplacements. However, these routes were completely dismantled immediately after the end of the Second World War, although remains in the area of the western beach were still present in the mid-1960s. Likewise, the military bunkers , camps and positions that had been built on the peninsula disappeared in the 1950s . Only the concrete slab road, which was also built by the Wehrmacht , as well as the parking and turning areas created at the time have been preserved to this day.

Until 1992, part of the Royal Harbor and the Elbow of NATO served as a temporary air-to-ground firing range . Air force maneuvers were held in October and November . For this purpose, a special tower - similar to a small tower  - was built as an observation post , but it was dismantled at the end of the 1980s when the maneuvers were stopped. Today only warning signs referring to the remains of ammunition in the meadows on the west bank of the Königshafen remind of the military past.

Use and recreational value

Ellenbogen - north coast, with Sylt ferry List - Rømø

Via a private road that starts as a dead end at the Ellenbogenberg and leads to the Elbow, you can drive or walk to the parking lot east of the List Ost lighthouse on the Ostellenbogen against payment of a toll for motorized vehicles (cyclists and pedestrians free) To reach the tip of the elbow . In the area of the North Sea Wadden Sea to the east and south of it, the municipality of List offers guided mudflat hikes in the warm season of the holiday season .

A natural sandy beach stretches for about 3 km along the north coast of the peninsula; On the northwest, north and east coasts, where storm surges are sometimes particularly severe, swimming is life-threatening due to dangerous ocean currents ( trekkers ) and is therefore prohibited. Before a limited beach portion on the south side of the Ostellenbogens is wind and Kitesurfen allowed.
