Elmer Gantry is an American feature film from 1960 based on the novel of the same name by the Nobel Prize winner Sinclair Lewis . In Germany it was also shown under the cinema title Elmer Gantry - God is in Business .

action

Elmer Gantry is a sly figure who hangs around in pubs serving alcohol during the prohibition era, has dropped out of theology studies and chases after every woman. On a tour as a sales representative, Gantry discovers that being a representative of God on a tented mission can make much better sales.

Missionary Sarah Falconer knows how to move the people of the American Midwest to join the Church in droves. Gantry becomes her assistant and awakens her love. In the city of Zenith, Sarah Falconer first wants to proselytize the die-hard townspeople, then use the proceeds from her collection to build her own tabernacle .

Gantry runs into a former lover who works in a brothel . She tries to blackmail him with compromising photos. Sarah Falconer agrees to pay the extortion fee, but the photos still reach the press. This ruined the mission company.

Like the novel, the film takes a critical position on the diversity of the American faith communities and the corruptibility of their priests, community leaders, and community members.
