Ely is in northeast Minnesota. It is surrounded by the Superior National Forest . According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 7.0 square kilometers. West of Ely is Lake Vermilion .
history
Ely received city charter in 1887. It was named after Ohio businessman Arthur Ely.
