Emerson , full name Emerson Ferreira da Rosa (born April 4, 1976 in Pelotas ), is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Career

In 1997 the defensive midfielder made the leap to Europe and moved from his Brazilian club Gremio Porto Alegre to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga . Three extremely successful seasons later he was transferred to AS Roma for what was then the Bundesliga record fee of DM 36 million , with whom he became Italian champions in 2000/01 .

In the summer of 2004, Emerson moved to Juventus Turin together with successful coach Fabio Capello and completed two seasons for the Italian record champions. When Juve was sentenced to relegation to Serie B in 2006 in the wake of the manipulation scandal , he left the club and, like Capello, was signed by Real Madrid .

In August 2007 Emerson moved back to Serie A for AC Milan, as he no longer played a role in the plans of Real coach Bernd Schuster . At Milan , the Brazilian played 40 games in two years, but did not finally manage to fight for a regular place. On April 21, 2009, he terminated his contract in Milan for personal reasons. After terminating his contract with AC Milan, he joined the Brazilian club FC Santos . He ended his career on October 17, 2009.

Emerson took part in the 1998 and 2006 World Championships . At the 2002 World Cup he was supposed to be the captain of the Seleção , but sustained an injury shortly before the start of the tournament when he was in goal in an internal training game for the Brazilian national team. Brazil became world champions without him.
