Emmanuel III Delly
His Beatitude Emmanuel III Cardinal Delly (born September 27, 1927 in Tel Keppe near Mosul , Iraq , † April 8, 2014 in San Diego , USA ) was Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldean Catholic Church .
Life
Karim Geries Mourad Delly was ordained a priest on December 21, 1952 after studying in Mosul and Rome . He obtained a licentiate of philosophy and became a doctor of theology and canon law doctorate . In 1960 he returned to Iraq and was appointed general secretary of the then Patriarch Paul II Cheikho . In December 1962 he was appointed auxiliary bishop and patriarchal vicar and titular archbishop of Palaeopolis in Asia . He was ordained bishop on April 19 of the following year by the Patriarch of Babylon, Paul Cheikho . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Amadiyah , Raphael Bidawid , the Latin Archbishop of Baghdad , Armand Etienne Blanquet du Chayla , and the Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Baghdad , Athanase Jean Daniel Bakose .
He attended the second and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. On May 6, 1967, he was raised to the rank of Archbishop as Titular Archbishop of Kaskar dei Caldie . In 1997 he was finally appointed Curia Bishop of the Patriarchate of Babylon. When he reached the age of 75, he resigned on October 24, 2002.
The Synod of the Chaldean Catholic Church, initially divided and unsuccessful in appointing a successor to the late Patriarch Raphael I. Bidawid in Baghdad, was finally able to rely on the elderly Delly as Patriarch of Babylon and associated with it on December 3, 2003 in Rome Chaldean Archbishop of Baghdad agree.

In the meantime, Jacques Ishaq , the Chaldean Curial Archbishop , had been appointed administrator of the Chaldean Church. He was succeeded as patriarch on February 1, 2013 by Louis Raphaël I. Sako .
Emmanuel III Delly, who with Benedict XVI. was friends, was buried in Detroit , where his close relatives live.
