In humans, the rectum is the last end of the large intestine , about 20 cm long , which ends in the anus . The rectum is divided again into two parts: the rectum ( rectal ) is from the anal canal through an internal sphincter ( internal anal sphincter separated). The intestinal contents are stored in the rectum until the next emptying. The defecation reflex is used for emptying .

In birds , the entire area of the large intestine beyond the appendix is referred to as the rectum because it cannot be divided into colon and rectum.
