Englewood is an American city in Arapahoe County in the US state of Colorado . It has 30,255 inhabitants (as of 2010). Englewood lies at 1637 m in the Front Range below the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains on the South Platte River . The city is now a southwest suburb of Denver and is connected to the region's light rail network. It is connected to the national road network by the US highways US 85 and US 285 .

history

Originally the High Plains east of the Rocky Mountains were populated by Indians from the Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples . They lived as representatives of the classic prairie Indians from the bisons , who populated the prairies by the millions.

The first whites in the region were the participants of the Pike Expedition , who explored the regions acquired in the Louisiana Purchase in 1806/07 and reached the South Platte River at the turn of the year and pulled along it. It wasn't until the 1850s that the region became more important. Some prospectors on the California Trail en route to the California Gold Rush explored the first mountain range of the Rocky Mountains along the way . In 1858, William Green Russell and 12 colleagues found gold at Little Dry Creek and founded a gold digger camp at the mouth of the creek into the South Platte River in what is now Englewood. They were successful and the Colorado Gold Rush began.

In 1864, Thomas and Mary Skerritt filed a claim to a settlement plot under the Homestead Act that encompassed much of what is now the city. In the following years more settlers came, the land was divided, sold, divided again and by about 1880 three settlement centers - Petersburg , Cherrelyn and Orchard Place , and several scattered settlements had emerged. The agricultural basis was mainly fruit plantations, which supplied the much faster and larger city of Denver. Thomas Skerritt himself built the first direct street there, which was named Broadway because of its width and is still used today. In 1890 the region was connected to the railway network.

In 1903 the settlements decided to merge and found an administrative unit with political self-government. It got the name Englewood because of the high proportion of forest, which distinguished the area from the surrounding prairie and semi-deserts. A school had existed since 1892, followed by a hospital, several theaters and a tram in the next few years.

Industrial establishments settled here, including Alexander Industries , a small aircraft manufacturer, in 1923 and General Iron Works in 1924 , whose steel mill was the city's main employer until the fall of the Colorado steel industry and its closure in 1985.

Englewood today

Today the city has a very small-scale economic structure. It has more jobs and companies per unit of land than any other place in the Rocky Mountains region of Colorado, while its average income remains well below the average for the Denver metropolitan area.

The urban area is almost completely built up and surrounded by other densely built-up settlements, there are green areas in the form of city parks that were created in the 1960s and 70s with federal funding. Several hospitals in Englewood have central functions for the region. The headquarters of the global telecommunications company Liberty Global is also located here . The US-based satellite TV provider Dish Network and its technical service provider EchoStar are also based in the city.

The city has been twinning with Belm in Lower Saxony since 2007 .
