history

The origins of the place go back to the settlement by trading Phoenicians . The town received its city rights (administrative rights "foral") for the first time in 1229, which King Manuel I confirmed in 1513 as part of his administrative reforms. In 1855 the previously independent district ("Conselho") of Ericeira was dissolved and incorporated into the district of Mafra.

In the 19th century the place experienced a significant boom. Its port was considered the fourth largest in the country around 1850 (after Lisbon, Porto and Setubal), and its customs authority was responsible for the coast from Cascais to Figueira da Foz. Since the middle of the 19th century aristocratic families settled here (Burnay, Ulrich, Rivotti). With the advent of the railroad, the port then increasingly lost its supra-regional importance. However, sardine fishing fleets established themselves and in the meantime created 500 jobs on the ships alone.

The place also became famous when the last king of Portugal, Manuel II , was surprised by the republican revolution and the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic on October 5, 1910 in his hunting lodge in the nearby Mafra , and he went into exile via Ericeira England fled.

During World War II , neutral Portugal was a destination for many refugees, and Ericeira was one of the places where larger groups stayed, especially Germans, Dutch, Belgians, Poles and French.

Since then, Ericeira has become increasingly known as a holiday destination. In January 2013 the American television broadcaster Fox News voted Ericeira as one of the 10 most interesting small towns in Europe, the 10 coolest small towns in Europe .

In addition to the winding streets of the old town center and various centuries-old chapels, the Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro church is worth seeing, which dates back to a first chapel from 1446 and was expanded and converted to its present form. You can see azulejos from the 17th century, baroque figures of Peter and John the Baptist, ornate reredos and gold-plated carvings ( talha dourada ).

The diverse local bird life can be observed here on the cliffs, in fjord- like indentations and ledges of rock running into the sea.

The Filarmónica Cultural Ericeira wind orchestra, founded in 1849 , also runs a music school and performs concerts. On guest performances they are u. a. also been to Germany, where they took second and third places in various categories at the 44th Rasteder Musiktage in 1999 .

surfing

Located between the westernmost point of the European mainland ( Cabo da Roca ) and the Cabo Carvoeiro , the Atlantic is characterized by more frequent and stronger winds and corresponding waves. This is why the beaches of Ericeira are popular with surfers , especially Praia de Ribeira d'Ilhas . Accordingly, Ericeira has often hosted international surfing competitions and has hosted the ASP World Championships (WQS) since 1985. In 2011 Ericeira was declared the first "surf reserve in Europe", after Malibu / Santa Cruz in California and Manly Beach in Australia as the third area worldwide.

A number of surf schools, rentals, bars and specialized hotels have established themselves in Ericeira for everything to do with surfing.

economy

The beaches, the sea water that is particularly rich in iodine, the importance for surfing and the proximity to the greater Lisbon area have made tourism the most important factor in Ericeira. In earlier times fishing was the main livelihood of the place, but is now in the process of dissolving as the main livelihood.
