Erich Hoffmann (born September 26, 1904 in Heinitz (Neunkirchen) , † October 16, 1989 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German agricultural scientist .

Life

Hoffmann was the son of a general director of A. Riebeck'sche Montanwerke . After attending school, he studied business administration in Frankfurt am Main . During his studies he became a member of Corps Austria in 1926 . 1929/1930 he was chairman of the German Student Union (DSt). He then moved to the University of Halle (Saale) , where he received his doctorate in agricultural sciences. After a stay as an assistant in the USA , he settled in Mecklenburg and ran his own estate there. In 1945 he returned to the University of Halle and completed his habilitation there in 1947 in the subject of agricultural management. In 1950 he became director of the Institute for Agricultural Management and Labor Studies at the University of Halle. Shortly thereafter, however, he was targeted by the Ministry of State Security . From there he was accused of "bourgeois views" and membership in the Spirituskreis professorial circle . After June 17, 1953, Hoffmann got into an open conflict with the SED. In 1958 Hoffmann was dismissed from the university under pressure from the State Security. In addition, he was dismissed from his part-time position as director of the state-owned teaching and research facility at Gut Etzdorf near Halle. From 1958 the agricultural scientist worked at the German Academy for Agricultural Sciences and was a member of the church leadership of the church province of Saxony from 1960 to 1972 . He was a "very prominent speaker" in the Protestant student community in Halle, especially in their first domicile, the former Jenastift . Under the President of the Leopoldina Kurt Mothes , Erich Hoffmann was a member of this all-German academy of natural scientists based in Halle.
