Erich Ferdinand Nicolaus Schlesinger (* December 23, 1880 in Warstade , † December 17, 1956 in Rostock ) was an administrative lawyer, politician and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Erich Schlesinger was born as the son of the railway engineer Sigmund Schlesinger and his wife Amalie. The father was involved in the construction of the Neustrelitz - Warnemünde railway line and therefore Erich Schlesinger attended the high school in Rostock until 1890, then that in Güstrow . In 1900 he finished school with the Abitur. From 1900 to 1903 he studied law and political science in Heidelberg , Munich , Berlin and Rostock. The doctorate to Dr. jur. took place in 1903. From 1903 to 1907 Schlesinger completed a legal clerkship in Güstrow. Afterwards Schlesinger became an official in Schwerin . Here he worked in the domanial administration, in the justice and interior ministries of the state administration of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. His specialty was the Mecklenburg jurisprudence and its systematic presentation based on the latest findings. After the end of the feudalist Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg in 1918, he became an official of the state of Mecklenburg in 1919. The humanistic, liberal and democratic Schlesinger was only now given the opportunity to realize progressive ideas. The democratic state constitution, the district and community regulations, the reorganization of the insurance system and coastal protection bear his signature. Against the resistance of the small, local electricity works, Schlesinger worked out the organization of a nationwide uniform electricity supply.

In 1925 he was Ministerial Director in the Ministry of the Interior, and from 1929 Minister of State for Interior and Justice. After the National Socialists took over government in Mecklenburg in 1932, he was replaced as Minister of State. His refusal to join the NSDAP meant that he was first transferred to temporary retirement, and in 1934 to permanent retirement. He was also forced to leave his home. He moved to Rostock because the proximity of the university favored his activity as editor of the "Mecklenburgische Zeitschrift für Rechtspflege, jurisprudence and administration", which had existed since 1924. For political reasons he was compelled to give up this job in 1937.

From 1943 to 1945 Schlesinger worked as a member of the board of the Mecklenburg hail and fire insurance company in Neubrandenburg. After the end of the Second World War he was appointed ministerial director of the justice department in the state administration. Here he developed the criteria for denazification , which were adopted by all commissions in the Soviet occupation zone .

In 1946, Schlesinger was appointed honorary professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Rostock and was given a lectureship in administrative law. From 1949 to 1956 he taught as a full professor for administrative law and also held courses at the social, agricultural and technical faculties. From 1949 to 1950 Schlesinger was director of the legal seminars, until 1952 Vice-Rector.

In 1946 the state administration appointed him as a curator at the University of Rostock. Here teaching had to be set up under the new, politically changed conditions with all the problems that the post-war period brought with it. Associated with the name Schlesinger are important university buildings such as B. on the grounds of the university clinics and student dormitories. He was an initiator and promoter of the workers 'and farmers' faculties and women's studies.

In this way, Schlesinger earned great merit and a high reputation among university members. He was elected rector in 1952, when he was 71 years old. He carried out this activity until his death in 1956.

From 1954 to 1956 Erich Schlesinger was a member of the Rostock district assembly .
