After an accident, Ernesto Brambilla switched to monoposto racing. It is worth mentioning that he won the Italian Formula 3 championship in 1966. In 1968 he took third place in the overall standings behind Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the European Trophy for Formula 2 drivers (the predecessor of the Formula 2 European Championship) and Henri Pescarolo . Brambilla won the races in Hockenheim and Vallelunga . In the European Trophy in 1969 he was eighth in the overall standings, each time as a works driver for Scuderia Ferrari .

But just before the race he had a motorcycle accident and his injuries left him severely handicapped. Brambilla was able to qualify because only 16 drivers started training. But the pain was too great for him to take up the race.

Ernesto's brother Vittorio had more success in Formula 1. He won the Austrian Grand Prix in 1975 .
