Ernst Lemmer House in Berlin-Friedrichshain

The Ernst-Lemmer-Haus , named after the German politician Ernst Lemmer ( DDP or DStP, later CDU ) is a former factory building in Berlin- Friedrichshain, Richard-Sorge-Strasse 21A, which has been converted into an office building . It houses the headquarters of the Unionhilfswerk companies and the Landesverband Berlin e. V.

Historical use

The building with the two courtyards was designed by the architect Reinhard Brehm as a residential building with factory building for a candy, marzipan and chocolate factory and built in 1896/1897 as one of the first buildings in the southern part of the street, which was then still called Tilsiter Straße . As early as 1905 the building was taken over by a clinic and confectionery production was discontinued. From 1922/1923 the Osram company used the building and from 1926/1927 the North German type foundry .

Construction, architecture and structure

The building complex consists of two parts. The residential building (No. 22) is equipped with various decorations in the Rococo style, the factory building in the courtyard (No. 21A) is four-story, faced with yellow and red bricks and equipped with very large windows. Today, both parts belong to the Unionhilfswerk , the house was previously managed by the Friedrichshain housing association (WBF), the factory building by the Treuhandanstalt . With the help of the Berlin monument authorities, the independent welfare organization was able to professionally restore both buildings by the year 2000, and in 1997 it relocated its headquarters from Berlin-Dahlem to these buildings. It was named after Ernst Lemmer (1898-1970), who was a co-founder of the Unionhilfswerk in 1946 and later Federal Minister in various ministries.
