The Union's Fund (proper spelling: UNION HILFSWERK) is a carrier of voluntary welfare organizations based in Berlin . The carrier provides help for self-help out of Christian and social responsibility. Examples are the operation of emergency shelters for cold relief workers or volunteer agencies.

history

The Unionhilfswerk was founded in 1946 by Christian and socially committed women and men around the Christian Democrats Jakob Kaiser and Ernst Lemmer in view of the hardship and misery of the post-war period in Berlin.

In 2004 the Unionhilfswerk-Förderstiftung was founded, which focuses on palliative geriatrics and hospice work as well as the mobility of people with disabilities.

In 2014 the Unionhilfswerk Berlin foundation was founded, which forms the roof of the six non-profit organizations.

The Unionhilfswerk has had its headquarters in the Ernst-Lemmer-Haus in Richard-Sorge-Strasse in Berlin's Friedrichshain district since 1997 and is a member of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, Landesverband Berlin e. V.

structure

The group of companies comprises more than 130 facilities, services and projects. The more than 3,000 employees support people with disabilities, with mental illnesses and mental impairments, work in outpatient and inpatient care, in refugee and homeless assistance, in day-care centers, in counseling and mentoring. The following companies belong to the sponsoring organization: Unionhilfswerk Ambulante Dienst gGmbH, Unionhilfswerk Senioren -einrichtungen gGmbH, Unionhilfswerk Soziale Dienst gGmbH, Union Sozialereinrichtungen gGmbH and Unionhilfswerk Sozialeinrichtungen Brandenburg gGmbH.

In addition to the full-time employees, around 1,100 volunteers are active. In 17 district associations and three interest groups of the Unionhilfswerk Landesverband Berlin e. V. volunteers create a range of events and information primarily for older people.

The Unionhilfswerk Berlin Foundation is responsible for the supervision of all companies, the management of the group of companies and the promotion of the purpose of the association. The Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees are responsible. The foundation's board of directors manages the business and thus assumes responsibility for the strategic management and operational control of the corporate group. The voluntary board of trustees acts as a supervisory body for the entire group of companies.

Prize of the Unionhilfswerk-Förderstiftung

The Unionhilfswerk-Förderstiftung has been awarding a journalist prize since 2006 for contributions that deal in a special way with the topics of dying , death and mourning . In 2012 the prize was renamed the " Richard von Weizsäcker Journalist Prize " in honor of the politician Richard von Weizsäcker who died in 2015 .

The prize of the Unionhilfswerk-Förderstiftung based in Berlin is awarded every two years by an independent jury chaired by the former EKD council chairman Wolfgang Huber . It is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros.
