Ernst Müller (born May 16, 1954 in Düren ) is a former German boxer . 1979 he became European champion of the amateurs in the welterweight division .

Career

Ernst Müller began boxing as a teenager at the Düren boxing ring in 1955 . His first trainer was Heinz Jäger. He was a member of this club until 1974. In the same year he moved to BC Essen -Steele , 1975 to BF Ringfrei Mülheim and 1976 to Bayer Leverkusen , where he was trained by Helmut Müller. As a junior he boxed in the lightweight , from 1975 to 1977 in the light welterweight and then until the end of his career in 1982 in the welterweight .

Ernst Müller's sporting successes began in 1971 when he took 3rd place in the German junior lightweight championship. In 1972 he was then German junior champion in the same weight class. In 1972 he took part in the European Junior Championships in Bucharest , but retired there in the quarterfinals after a defeat against Bozidar Varic from Yugoslavia and finished in 5th place. In 1974 he started for the first time in the German senior light welterweight championship and lost there in the final against Burkhart Barnowski. In 1979, Ernst Müller beat Michael Kerscher on points in the final of the German championship. He thus qualified for participation in the European Championship in Cologne . He won there in welterweight over Gaetano Caso, Italy by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Alexander Koschkin , USSR (5: 0), Kalevi Kosunen, Finland (5: 0) and Sreten Mirkovic , Yugoslavia (5: 0) each safely on points and became European champion in a superior style .

1980 Ernst Müller won his sixth German championship title in welterweight. Participation in the Olympic Games in Moscow should have been the highlight of his boxer career. However, because of the German boycott of the games, this ultimately did not take place.

Ernst Müller then ended his international career, but continued to fight at the national level until 1982. He played a total of 256 fights, of which he lost only 23. Even today, Müller is still loyal to his sport as a trainer in the Düren boxing ring. Müller was Manfred Zielonka's trainer .

The trained glassblower has been working for the city administration of Düren since the insolvency of the Peill & Putzler glassworks . He is married and has four kids.
