Manfred Zielonka (born January 24, 1960 in Kreuzthal near Opole / Upper Silesia ) is a former German boxer . He won a bronze medal in welterweight and light middleweight at the world championships for amateurs in 1982 in Munich and at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

Career

Zielonka came to Düren with his parents in 1967 as a repatriate of the German minority in Poland . As a teenager he played handball there for several years before he found boxing. He became a member of the Düren boxing ring , where he was trained by Lambert Schulze, Ernst Müller and Heinz Jäger. One of his training partners was Ernst Müller . He later moved to Ringfrei Mülheim . Zielonka learned the trade of a car mechanic, but then went to the better training opportunities as a regular soldier in the armed forces , where Siegfried Schneider became his trainer. The 1.78 meter tall athlete initially boxed in the welterweight division and switched to the light middleweight division in 1983 (weight classes up to 67 or 71 kg body weight).

In 1980, Zielonka was a clear win on points (5: 0) over Michael Kopzog from BC Gelsenkirchen -Erle German welterweight champion. He started this year at the CISM military world championship in Jacksonville / USA , but was eliminated from the welterweight division in the quarterfinals by losing points against Koudio Kouassi from Ivory Coast and finished in 5th place.

In 1982, Zielonka lost in the quarterfinals of the German championship against Fritz Herrmann from BC Gunzenhausen . However, with a 3rd place at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale), he won the right to start the World Championship in Munich . In Munich he was in excellent shape and defeated in the welterweight division Miguel Narvares from Puerto Rico (5-0), Peter Wanyoke, Kenya (3-2) and Czeslaw Kapalka from Poland (4-1) on points. In the semifinals he met Mark Breland , USA , probably the best boxer of the entire world championship and lost to this after a good fight on points (0: 5). He won a World Cup bronze medal with it . In 1982 he was also voted boxer of the year by the readers of the specialist boxing body .

Zielonka had very bad luck at the German championship in 1983, because he had to be taken out of the fight in the final fight of the light middleweight division against Gerhard Standschuß from BC Norden due to an injury in the first round. In the CISM Military World Championship in Bangkok but he battled with point victories over Sundy Paito from Uganda and Mauro Galvano, Italy and a brief point defeat in the final against Boonthun Silakorn from Thailand (2: 3 judges votes) a silver medal .

In 1984, Zielonka could not take part in the German championships because of an injury. At the 4th Intercup in Karlsruhe he then proved his good form with a 2nd place. He was only defeated in Karlsruhe in the final against Ángel Espinosa from Cuba on points. He won a starting place in the German team at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . There he won over Ambrose Mlilo from Zimbabwe (4: 1), Gustavo Ollo from Argentina (5: 0) and Gnohery Sery, IVC (5: 0) on points, but suffered an injury in this fight that prevented him from doing so to fight against Frank Tate of the United States for entry into the final. But at least he won an Olympic bronze medal.

1985 Zielonka won the Intercup in Sindelfingen . In the final he defeated Michail Tachow from Bulgaria on points. At the European Championships in Copenhagen he was then defeated in the round of 16 against the same boxer and only came in 9th place. At the German championship in 1985 he started in the middleweight division. He made it to the final, but lost to Sven Ottke from Spandauer BC on points.

Then he ended his career and devoted himself to his professional advancement as an employee of the city of Düren.
