Ernst von Siemens

Ernst Albrecht von Siemens (born April 9, 1903 in Kingston upon Hull , Great Britain; † December 31, 1990 in Starnberg ) was a German industrialist , the only son of Carl Friedrich von Siemens and the youngest grandson of the inventor and company founder Werner von Siemens . He came from the old Goslar City Gender Siemens .

Life

He studied physics at the Technical University of Munich before he started working at the Wernerwerk for telecommunications technology in Berlin-Siemensstadt in 1929 . In 1943 Ernst von Siemens was made a deputy, in 1948 a full member and in 1949 a chairman of the Managing Board of Siemens & Halske AG . Until 1956 he was chairman of the board. In 1945 he was also appointed deputy and in 1948 full member of the Managing Board of Siemens-Schuckertwerke .

Because of the Berlin blockade , in 1947 the company relocated the headquarters of Siemens & Halske AG from Berlin to Erlangen, where the Siemens-Schuckert production facilities were located, and in 1949 to Munich, where the Ludwig Ferdinand Palace on Wittelsbacher Platz was initially rented and in 1957 for the Headquarters was acquired. Ernst von Siemens successfully managed the rebuilding of the company after the Second World War . As early as 1950 it had reached 90 percent of the 1936 production. From 1954, data processing began, producing semiconductor components and the first computers. Siemens-Electrogeräte AG was founded in 1957 for the consumer goods sector (e.g. washing machines, televisions) . In medical technology, too, it was possible to expand one's position with the production of pacemakers . In 1962 the group employed 240,000 people and achieved annual sales of 5.4 billion DM. This had quadrupled within a decade.

From 1956 to 1966, Ernst von Siemens, as the successor to his cousin Hermann von Siemens , was chairman of the supervisory board of the two parent companies Siemens & Halske AG and Siemens-Schuckertwerke AG, which were merged under his leadership in 1966 to form today's Siemens AG , together with Siemens Reiniger-Werke AG, which together with Wernerwerk for Medical Technology subsequently formed the Siemens Medical Solutions division . From 1966 to 1971 he was then Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG.

The reorganization was completed in 1969 with the formation of six corporate divisions (components, data technology, energy technology, installation technology, medical technology, communications technology), five central divisions (business administration, finance, human resources, technology, sales) and numerous so-called regional units (branches, foreign branches). Nevertheless, an extensive network of subsidiaries and associated companies remained. In 1967 Brown, Boveri & Cie. the Zuse KG to 70%, two years later to 100%. At the same time, the household appliance sector was merged with that of Bosch to form BSH Bosch and Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH). In 1969 the subsidiary Transformatoren Union (TU) and Kraftwerk Union (KWU) were founded together with AEG .

In 1971 his nephew Peter von Siemens succeeded him as chairman of the supervisory board. Ernst von Siemens then remained a simple member of the supervisory board until 1978, and from 1978 until his death he was honorary chairman of the supervisory board.

Ernst von Siemens was unmarried and had no children.

Promote culture

Ernst von Siemens promoted both science and the arts. In 1958 he founded the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation for the Advancement of Science, named after his father . The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation was established in 1972 . It has been awarding the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize since 1974 , which is currently endowed with 250,000 euros. In 1983 Ernst von Siemens founded the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation . The aim of this foundation is to provide financial support for the purchase of works of art for museums. The foundation also supports art exhibitions. In addition to substantial endowment capital and later donations, Ernst von Siemens also bequeathed his private art collection to the art foundation.

Ernst von Siemens was a member of the Munich Academic Alpine Club . He laid out a botanical garden on his private estate in the foothills of the Alps.

Awards

In 1959 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit.
