Erp of Verden
Erp (Adelperio / Albertus) von Verden († February 19, 994 ), probably from the house of the Erpones , was Bishop of Verden from 976 to 993 .
Erp was provost of the cathedral in Bremen when he was appointed Bishop of Verden in 976 on the recommendation of Archbishop Adaldag of Hamburg-Bremen , a relative of the Billunger family . This intervention in favor of his cathedral canon makes it clear what interest the Billungers had in occupying the Verden bishopric that would suit them. The two immediate predecessors of Erps, the bishops Amelung (933-962) and Brun (962-976), were both from the Billunger family, and the diocese can almost be regarded as a house diocese of this family at this time.
