The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg ( lat. : Archidioecesis Ioannesburgensis , Engl. : Archdiocese of Johannesburg ) is a in South Africa located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Johannesburg ( Gauteng ).

history

1886 was by Pope Leo XIII. the Apostolic Prefecture of the Transvaal was founded. Pius X raised this in 1904 to the Apostolic Vicariate Transvaal ("Transvaallensis"), Pius XII. renamed this in 1948 to the Apostolic Vicariate Johannesburg ("Ioannesburgensis").

The diocese of Johannesburg was founded on January 11, 1951 with the reorganization of the church hierarchy in South Africa by Pope Pius XII. founded. The first bishop was William Patrick Whelan OMI. It was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Pretoria until Johannesburg became a metropolitan seat on June 5, 2007.

The suffragan dioceses Klerksdorp , Manzini and Witbank are assigned to the Archdiocese of Johannesburg .
