Esmail Qaʾani ( Persian اسماعیل قاآنی, DMG Esmāʾil Qāʾānī ), also publishes Esmail / Ismail Ghaani / Gha'ani / Qaani / Qa'ani , (born August 8, 1957 in Mashhad , Iran ) is an Iranian major general of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and commander of the Quds Brigades .

Military career

In 1981 he received his military training at the Imam Ali Officers Academy in Tehran . He then fought against the Kurdish minority in Iran.

During the first Gulf War , during which he also met Qasem Soleimani , Qaʾani led the 5th Nasr Brigade and the 21st Imam Reza Brigade fighting against Sadam Hussein's troops .

In 1997, Qasem Soleimani was appointed commander of the Quds Brigades by Yahya Rahim Safavi and Qaʾani as his deputy. Qaʾani oversaw financial disbursements to paramilitary groups, including Hezbollah and a weapons shipment for Gambia that was intercepted in Nigeria in October 2010 . On March 27, 2012, Qaʾani was added to the list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) .

After Qasem Soleimani was killed by a targeted US drone attack near Baghdad airport , Iranian leader Ali Khamenei promoted Esmail Qaʾani to commander of the Quds Brigades on January 3, 2020.

Statements in the Syrian and Iraqi civil war

On May 25, 2012, 108 people died in the Hula massacre . The United Nations investigators concluded that the Shabiha militias were responsible for this. On May 27, Qaʾani gave an interview to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) saying, "Thanks to Iran's presence in Syria - physical and not physical - major massacres have been prevented ... if the Islamic Republic (Iran) is not in Syria - the massacre of his people would have multiplied. " The interview was deleted from the ISNA website within a few hours, but copies remained with other news outlets. According to Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-Israeli Middle East expert, Qaʾani's testimony was "the first time a senior IRGC officer admitted that the Quds force was operating in Syria".

At a ceremony to commemorate martyrs on July 5, 2017, he alleged that the US had unsuccessfully spent $ 6 trillion on Iraq and Afghanistan to attack Iran. He also said, "America has taken more losses from us than we have taken from them." "

On October 13, 2017, US President Donald Trump rejected the nuclear agreement with Iran , the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Trump also announced new sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard . Qaʾani replied: “We are not a belligerent country. But every military action against Iran is regretted ... Trump's threats against Iran will harm America ... We have buried many ... like Trump and know how to fight America. "
