Eugene Helmlé

Eugen Helmlé (born September 7, 1927 in Ensdorf (Saar) ; † November 27, 2000 in Sulzbach / Saar ) was a German writer and literary translator .

Life

Eugen Helmlé studied Romance Studies at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken , where he also lectured on Spanish from 1970 to 1982 . From 1960 his extensive work of translations of fictional works appeared, mainly from French and Spanish .

Helmlé, who was a member of the Association of German Writers and the PEN Center Germany , received the Saarland Art Prize in 1972 and the Prix ​​lémanique de la traduction of the University of Lausanne in 1985 . In recognition of his translation work, the Saarländischer Rundfunk and the Foundation of the Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry of Saarland launched the " Eugen Helmlé Translator Prize " in 2004 , which has been awarded annually to a German and a French translator since 2005.
