Life

Robert Bober was born in 1931 to Jewish parents from Poland. In 1933 his parents fled from the National Socialists and emigrated to France. In July 1942 they were warned by friends, which enabled them to avoid a mass raid (“Aktion spring wind”).

A few years later, Bober left school after having obtained the certificat d'études primaires . At 16 he began an apprenticeship as a tailor, completed it and worked in this profession until the age of 22. Then he became a potter; in the summers he led therapy projects with sick children, especially with Holocaust orphans who had lost all social contact.

In the 1950s, Bober met François Truffaut and became his assistant in the films Les Quatre Cents Coups (1959), Tirez sur le pianiste (1960) and Jules et Jim (1962). In 1967 he shot his first documentary for television (Cholem Aleichem, un écrivain de langue Yiddish). In the 1960s and 1970s, his documentaries mainly dealt with the post-war period and the aftermath of the Holocaust.
