European year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Union has been proclaiming European Years since 1983 , to each of which it has assigned a socio-cultural theme. During a European Year, topic-related public relations work takes place at European and national level, which is intended to make the population and the governments of the EU member states aware of the chosen topic. The European Commission provides funding for projects that take place on these topics . The topics are selected by the EU several years in advance and should deal with a wide variety of content.

For example, the year 2008 was chosen by the European Commission as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue . She justifies this with the fact that against the background of the EU eastward expansion as well as greater mobility and the related cultural exchange, the importance of intercultural dialogue and corresponding competencies is increasing.
