Example (born June 20, 1982 in Hammersmith , London ; real name Elliot John Gleave ) is a British rapper and singer .

Life

Elliot Gleave was born in Hammersmith in 1982 and was the older of two children. He attended All Saints Primary School in Fulham . He later went to ADT College (now Ashcroft Technology Academy ) in Wandsworth .

In 2000, Elliot attended Royal Holloway University of London to study film directing. During his studies he began to play music as an MC . During this time he met Joseph Gardner, AKA Rusher, the producer with whom he still works today. Gleave and Gardner created a concept album in the university's audio department. For example, one of these songs became Example's first white label vinyl release, A Pointless Song .

After graduating in 2003, Gleave spent a year in Australia in the props departments of such films as Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith . He returned to England and became a voice-over artist and editor for the Paramount Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central). He also worked as an editor at MTV Networks .

Gleave said in an interview that due to his introduction to hip-hop music through albums by Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, he is now also involved in rap .

stage name

His stage name Example came about from the abbreviation of his name EG ( E lliot G leave), which means example in the English language ( German for 'for example').

Career

2004–2008: Record deal and What We Made

After releasing three singles on his own label All the Chats , including the original 7 "version of I Don't Want To in January 2006, he received attention from Pete Tong , Zane Lowe and other DJs on BBC Radio 1 . Employees from four record companies also showed great interest in Example.

After signing a deal with the Beats record label in April 2006 , he released his response to Lily Allen's number one hit Smile , titled Vile , which was one of the most played songs on BBC Radio 1 at the time.

His first "real" release on the Beats record label was What We Made in November 2006, the video is about the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine. It was the harbinger of his eponymous album What We Made .

In September 2007 Examples' debut album What We Made was released , which was supposed to be released in June 2007. Examples' second official beat single was released in March 2007. It is titled You Can't Rap , followed by a re-release of I Don't Want to on June 11, 2007. His third single So Many Roads , a cover of The Carpenters ' We've Only Just Begun , was his last single on the Beats label , which went bankrupt in late 2007.

After Beats finally split, Example released his next single, Me + Mandy, on March 10, 2008 on his own label All the Chats . The video for Me + Mandy was shot for a total of four days and nights in London, it is set in over 30 locations with over 40 extras. It was filmed by Examples' friend Henry Scholfield, who also directed his music videos for Vile , You Can't Rap and I Don't Want to .

In February 2008 Example tried himself as a stand-up comedian on the series The Culture Show on the British radio station BBC2 . Supervised by the English comedian Richard Herring, he practiced this genre for six weeks, after which he had his first appearance in front of a large audience in the Covent Garden Pub in London . A week later he was starring alongside Richard Herring, Phill Jupitus and Harry Hill at the Lyric Hammersmith Theater, where he had performed ten years ago while studying at ADT College.

2009-2010: Won't Go Quietly

In September 2009 he had his first chart success with the song Watch the Sun Come Up . The song appeared as the harbinger of his second studio album, Won't Go Quietly , which was released on the record label Data Records . The single debuted at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart and climbed to number 19 the following week. The single Won't Go Quietly was released on January 17, 2010. It reached number 6 in the UK, making it Examples' first Top 10 hit. This song was also in the charts in Ireland. There he reached rank 36. In April 2010 he announced that the album Won't Go Quietly will be released on June 21, 2010. He also released the song Kickstarts as a single on June 13, 2010 . With this song he had his radio debut on April 13th on the radio station BBC Radio 1 - thanks to DJ Zane Lowe. Kickstarts was produced by Sub Focus and debuted at number 3 on the UK charts. The following week the album Won't Go Quietly was released , which debuted at number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. The fourth single from his album was Last Ones Standing on September 12, 2010 , with which he rose to Ragn 27 in the UK and 37 in Ireland. On November 14, 2010, he released the last single from the album. Two Lives only reached number 84 on the UK Singles Charts.

2011–2012: Playing in the Shadows

In June 2011 the song Changed the Way You Kiss Me was released as a single announcement of his album Playing in the Shadows . The song debuted at the top of the UK charts and became his biggest hit to date. Changed the Way You Kiss Me reached the top 10 in many European countries and achieved platinum status in Australia. The second single from the album was Stay Awake . The song was produced by Nero and was released on August 28, 2011. This single also rose to number one on the UK charts. His third single was called Midnight Run . It was released in December 2011 and peaked at number 30 on the UK Singles Chart. In September 2011, his third studio album Playing in the Shadows was released. The album also debuted at number one in the UK album charts and was also a great success in many other countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.

2012–2013: The Evolution of Man

In the spring of 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the song appeared kickstarts as a re-release , which the Swiss House - DJ DJ Antoine was produced, which also contributed his remix of this single. With this re-release, Example was also able to enter the German and Austrian charts .

Example wrote the song Chasing the Sun for the boy band The Wanted in 2012 . The track was released as a single in the United States in April 2012 and in the United Kingdom in May 2012 with remixes by Hardwell and Tantrum Desire and reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and was very successful in other countries. In January 2012, Example signed a recording deal with the US record label Mercury, a sub-label of Universal Music . He hoped to gain recognition in the United States with his next album. On August 17th, 2012 the tour dates for 2013 were announced. The 13-gig tour began in Bournemouth on February 11, 2013 and ended at the Manchester Arena on March 1, 2013. Support he received from the British dubstep - producer Benga , who also Examples album track Come Taste the Rainbow produced.

The single Say Nothing was released in September 2012 and rose to number 2 on the UK charts. The second single from the album Close Enemies was released in November 2012 and rose to number 37 on the UK charts. The third and final single from the album Perfect Replacement was released in February 2013 and rose to number 46 on the UK charts.

2013–2015: Live Life Living

The first single from the album Live Life Living , called All the Wrong Places , was released in September 2013 and reached number 13 on the UK charts. The second single Kids Again was released in March 2014 and also reached this position in the UK charts. The third single One More Day (Stay With Me) was released in June 2014 and reached number 4 in the UK charts. The fourth and final single 10 Million People was released in October 2014.

On July 10, 2015, the single Whiskey Story was released. The single Later followed in August 2016. The next single The Answer in January 2018.

2015–2018: Bangers & Ballads

In June 2018, Example announced their sixth album. The first single Back for More was released on August 3rd. The second single show Me How to Love followed on August 10th. The third single from the album Sit Down Gary was released on August 17th, the same day that the album was released. The album combines the music areas of the UK Garage as well as British hip-hop and trance .

2019-present: Some Nights Last for Days

After his sixth album, a number of singles such as All Night , Money , Click , Do It So Well and Sun Hits Your Eyes were released .

In April 2020, Example announced their seventh album. The first single Paperclips (Isolation Freestyle) was released on April 24th. The second single Erin , a song about his wife, was released on May 8th. The album will follow on June 12th. On this album, Example returns to its British hip-hop roots.

Filmography

During the filming of the promo video for his track What We Made in the abandoned city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine , Example also made an 18-minute documentary in the ghost towns, abandoned schools, hotels and amusement parks there. Many of the buildings are exactly as they were before the disaster. He said, "I don't think anyone who's been here can be for nuclear power ." Faced with desolation and decay, he remarked, "I recently read something about the only way we could survive if we made nuclear energy available, but you think, why should we let this happen after we see this?"
