The 2008/09 FA Cup was the 128th staging of the world's oldest soccer cup tournament; The Football Association Challenge Cup , or FA Cup for short . This cup season started with a record number of 762 clubs; after the draw but before the start, the club South Normanton Athletic was dissolved. 761 teams started the competition. Another two teams, Brierley Hill & Withymoor and FC Stapenhill got out in the first round, their opponents thus had a bye into the next round. The winner of this event was Chelsea .
The cup competition ended with the final at Wembley Stadium , London on May 30, 2009. This season there was a new television contract for the cup competition. The broadcast rights were transferred from BBC Sport and Sky Sports to ITV and Setanta Sports in August 2008 .

The FA Cup is played in rounds. Any team that has a certain level of performance and an appropriate playing field can take part. The game is played i. d. Usually only with a first leg. In the event of a tie, a second leg takes place. If the second leg also ends in a draw, the game goes into extra time or penalty shoot-out. This mode lasts until the sixth main round. From the semi-finals onwards there is only one game, possibly with extra time and penalty shoot-out.
Some teams are exempt from certain rounds:
- In the second qualifying round, the teams from Conference North / South (6th division of the English league) are added.
- In the fourth qualifying round, the teams of the Conference National (5th division of the English league) are added.
- In the first main round, the teams of League 1 and 2 of the Football League (3rd and 4th division of the English league) are added.
- In the third main round on the first weekend in January, the teams from the Football League Championship (2nd division of the English league) and the Premier League (1st division of the English division) are added
The final as well as the two semi-finals will take place in London's Wembley Stadium.
Each winner receives a bonus from the television money, which is staggered according to the round.

First main round
In the first main round, the 24 teams of Football League One or Two enter the competition.

Second main round
The draw took place on November 9, 2008.
The games were played on the weekend of November 29, 2008.
Third main round
In this round, the teams of the FA Premier League (20 teams) and the teams of the Football League Championship (24 teams) enter the competition.

The games were played on the weekend of January 5, 2009.
Fourth main round
The draw took place on January 4th, 2009.
The games were played on the weekend of January 24, 2009.
Fifth main round
