Fabrizio Barbazza (born April 4, 1963 in Monza ) is a former Italian racing driver .

Career

Fabrizio Barbazza was considered a wild but fast driver in the Italian Formula 3 Championship , which he finished third in a Dallara - Alfa Romeo in 1985 . Since there were no reasonable alternatives for him in the European racing series, he went to the USA . In 1986 he drove in the newly established American Races Series . A year later he switched to the IndyCar World Series and achieved a sensational third place in the Indianapolis 500 for Frank Arciero's team . He finished twelfth in the championship and was named Rookie of the Year .

Back in Europe, he drove in the Formula 3000 with little success . A first entry into Formula 1 failed. With the weak AGS , he did not qualify for a Grand Prix in 1991. It was better two years later . For the Scuderia Minardi he was able to qualify 8 times for a Grand Prix and was sixth at both the European Grand Prix in Donington and the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola . Nevertheless, he did not manage to really gain a foothold in Formula 1.

In 1995 he finished eighth in the Daytona 24 Hours and then had a serious accident in a Ferrari 333SP while racing at Road Atlanta . While trying to avoid the flying parts of an accident in front of him, Barbazza spun and Jeremy Dale drove straight into the side of Barbazza's Ferrari, which broke it in two. Barbazza sustained severe head injuries, a collapsed lung, a broken leg and a broken arm in the crash. He was placed in an artificial coma for better healing . After a year of convalescence , he finally retired from racing in 1996. He later ran a small hotel in Cuba .
