The Fernpass tunnel , actually specifically the Fernpass peak tunnel , in the Austrian state of Tyrol is a projected , 1360 meter long peak tunnel for road traffic that is supposed to pass under the Fernpass and cost 100 million euros .

history

The route over the Fernpass from Tyrol into the Allgäu area has been important since Roman times (variant of the Via Claudia Augusta ) and, along with the Inntal route to the Munich area, is the most important regional Alpine transit route across the northern Alps . It offers a connection to the Brenner Pass and the Reschen Pass to the south and is  well developed as the Fernpass road (B 179). As early as 1906 there were plans for a railway tunnel under the Fernpass next to the road, which were related to the plans for a Reschenbahn . The expansion of the road is in the context of the discussions about the pollution of Tyrol by the European north-south transit and the relocation of goods traffic to the rail, which the Brenner Base Tunnel is supposed to bring. In recent years, traffic over the Fernpass has increased due to the expansion of the German A 7 ; however, there is a general driving ban for trucks with a maximum permissible total weight of more than 7.5 t. An expansion as a motorway appears in principle impracticable because of the Alpine Convention and local resistance.

There have been more specific plans for the pass itself since the mid-2000s; they were formulated by the state government of Platter ( ÖVP / Greens ) in 2016 in the Fernpass strategy . In a 2012 study in particular, some route variants had already been specifically assessed. The cost estimate for the favored course for 2014 was around EUR 75 million. This plan provides for a west portal in the area of the hairpin curve at approx. 7.8 km of the B 179 and an east portal just before the Blindsee , with a short further tunnel section for the purpose of connecting to Radschuhbichl. At the same time, a study for rail route options from the Inn Valley to Ehrwald is being worked on again.

In October 2016, test drillings began to investigate the geology and hydrology , and Governor Platter announced that construction would start in 2019.

While the mayor of Füssen in the Allgäu is hoping for fewer traffic jams through the tunnel and is demanding funding from the EU , a study by the state of Tyrol suggests that a tunnel that could only have two lanes due to the Alpine Convention would not relieve the burden on the route. The traffic jams would even worsen through more block handling and the tunnel - in connection with the Tschirgant tunnel  - would attract more traffic. An improvement can only be expected if the vacationers' bed change is extended from Saturday to Sunday. For these reasons, the mayors of Reutte and Biberwier also spoke out against the tunnel.

Regardless of this, Platter announced the start of construction for 2021 and completion for 2025 Template: future / in 5 yearsat the beginning of 2018 . The building application is to be submitted to the newly elected Tyrolean state parliament in March or April 2018 . The Deputy Governor Ingrid Felipe (Greens), who was responsible for transport policy at the time , announced no resistance to the plans.

At the end of March 2019, the Kronenzeitung reported a confirmation from the Ausserferner National Councilor Elisabeth Pfurtscheller that the Fernpassscheiteltunnel was “as good as fixed”. An indication of this can be found in Nassereith: The local fire brigade has already ordered a tunnel vehicle in consultation with the State of Tyrol and will receive a vehicle with recovery equipment in 2020.
