Fertőszentmiklós ( German : Sankt Niklaus am Neusiedlersee , Croatian : Nikola ) is a small Hungarian town in Győr-Moson-Sopron County near the Austrian border and Lake Neusiedl ( Fertő ).
The name means in the German language about St. Niklas am Sumpf ( fertő literally means swamp , the Fertő-to is the Hungarian name of the Neusiedler See).
geography
Fertőszentmiklós is located in the Little Hungarian Plain on the Ikva River at about 140 m above sea level. The city is located about 25 km east of Sopron (Ödenburg) and 10 km west of Kapuvár . The Neusiedler See in turn is located approx. 8 km northwest of the city. Esterházy Palace , whose park borders the city, is also in the immediate vicinity .
The city belonged to the small area Sopron-Fertőd . Until World War Fertőszentmiklós was the Sopron County ( Sopron megye ) belonging.

The town is connected to the cities of Sopron, Kapuvár and Csorna by the trunk road 85. The Sopron - Győr railway line of the Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn AG (Raaberbahn / GySEV) has a northward branch to the Neusiedler Seebahn to Neusiedl am See (in Burgenland ) and an abandoned southern branch to Celldömölk in Fertőszentmiklós .
The place has the airfield Meidl Airport .
