General view of Fischpüddelchen

Fischpüddelchen is a fountain monument by Hugo Lederer originally erected in 1911 in front of the baptistery of Aachen Cathedral on the fish market in Aachen . The figure was melted down during World War II and recreated in 1954 based on the destroyed model by Heinrich-Clemens Dick. The fountain is a modified copy of the Fischerbuberl fountain by the sculptor Ignatius Taschner, which was built in 1910 and now stands on Wiener Platz in Munich .

description

The fountain figure is a bronze sculpture. It shows a putt-like , unclothed boy who holds a large live fish in each hand. The expression on his face is strained, as if he was concentrating entirely on not losing the fish. It bears a certain resemblance to Manneken Pis in Brussels , but the water outlet of the fountain comes from the mouths of the fish. The figure stands on a stone ball , which in turn is embedded on a column, at the foot of which there are two collecting basins. The fountain was fed with water from the Pau .

history

Fischpüddelchen was a gift from Lederer to the city, who already featured the Aachen equestrian statue of Emperor Friedrich III. had created. The fountain monument sparked controversy because of its revealing display, was relocated and hidden several times without authorization and therefore temporarily removed from public space in 1917. Resolutions of the city council from 1925 and 1931 were only implemented in 1933. Fischpüddelchen was placed back at the old location. The figure soon had to be given as a "metal donation" and was melted down.

In 1954 Heinrich-Clemens Dick made a replica of the original figure, unlike the chicken thief, no longer preserved as a model; it was again set up at the fish market. His son Georg Clemens Dick, then seven years old, served the artist as a model .
