Puerto Rico flag

The flag of Puerto Rico consists of five horizontal stripes of equal size in the colors red and white .

On the left side, the stripes are covered by a blue , isosceles triangle. A white, five-pointed star is depicted in it.

The color red symbolizes the blood of courageous men, white symbolizes victory and peace, and the color blue symbolizes the sky and the sea that surrounds the island of Puerto Rico . The star is a symbol of the unity of the nation, while the triangle represents the three powers of the state. It was designed by Francisco Gonzalo Marín in 1894 .

The flag is very similar to the flag of Cuba , with the colors blue and red swapped and the aspect ratio shortened to 2: 3. In 1895, the Puerto Rico section of the Partido Revolucionario Cubano (Cuban Revolutionary Party) in New York set this design as the official flag of the liberation movement of Puerto Rico.

Only since 1952 has the flag been allowed to be shown publicly to the right of the flag of the USA , while until then it was considered the flag of the illegal liberation movement of Puerto Rico. At sporting events such as the Olympic Games, a white banner with an emblem and “Puerto Rico” lettering based on the governor's flag was used.
