The air defense missile battalion 39 (FlaRakBtl 39) was an association of Air Force for air defense , the 1965 to 2002 at various locations in the Eifel and in Schleswig-Holstein stationed and finally the Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1 was assumed.

history

The unit was set up on July 1, 1959 as Luftwaffe Flak Battalion 48 (LwFlaBtl 48) in Goslar. In 1961 it was relocated to Büchel , and in 1962 to a newly built barracks in Ulmen / Eifel . Until 1965 the unit was equipped with 40 mm Bofors flak .

In the period from June 7, 1965 to August 28, 1965, the training on the HAWK system took place as part of a Hawk Package Training in Fort Bliss, near El Paso in America . The unit was then renamed the anti-aircraft missile battalion 39 and equipped with the new weapon system. The unit took part in the big field parade at the Nürburgring on June 6, 1969 and moved into the Thorsberg barracks in Süderbrarup in 1970 with the 1st and 4th batteries . The stick and supply batteries as well as the 2nd and 3rd batteries were housed in the Briesen barracks in Flensburg-Weiche from 1970 to 1973 and then in the Preuss barracks in Eckernförde - grass wood .

For training with the HAWK rocket, the unit carried out regular annual shooting. The first took place in 1967 on the "Mc Gregor Range" near Fort Bliss. In the following years it took place on the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI) in Crete, for the first time at the opening in 1968, whereby the first battery under Lieutenant Seifart achieved the best NATO result with 95.7% and the distinction "Outstanding" .

In the Transall accident on February 9, 1975 in Crete, 35 soldiers of the unit were killed. They are still remembered today on the day of the accident with the laying of wreaths on Crete as well as on the airfield in Hohn and in the cemetery in Süderbrarup.

From 1975 the upgrade to Improved HAWK took place and in 1981 the OTS (Operator Trainer Simulators) was introduced. The unit's HAWK weapon systems were upgraded to PIP (Product Improvement Program) in 1983 .

On October 1, 1989 the FlaRakBtl 39 was renamed to FlaRakG 39 and on January 1, 1993 to FlaRakGrp 39.

With the beginning of Army Structure 5 , the unit was disbanded on December 31, 2002. HAWK shares in the unit were transferred to anti-aircraft missile group 11 .

mascot

The first battery was given the nickname "Saubatterie" from 1964 and captured a family of wild boars in their former station in the Eifel, to whom they gave some first names to the unit's staff. The boar was named Karl Dieter , the two brooks were named Muttchen and Inge . From 1969 the animals lived in an enclosure at the Thorsberg barracks, where they were looked after by the spit and namesake of the "Saubatterie", HptFw Karl Schütte, who took the animals to Iserlohn after he left.
