The Noi Bai International Airport ( Vietn. : Cang hàng không Quốc tế Noi Bai , Eng. Noi Bai International Airport ) is the second largest airport in Vietnam (after Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City ) and the largest in North Vietnam. It is the airport of the capital Hanoi . It serves as the home airport and hub of Vietnam Airlines .

history

In 1960, construction began on a military airfield in the Red River Plain, about 20 kilometers north of Hanoi.

In 1965 the airfield was able to start operations.

After the Vietnam War and the Vietnamese reunification in 1975, the airfield was brought up to the standard of a civil airport. Nevertheless, the first passenger terminal building was not completed until 1980. The building was 1,700 square meters and could handle 300 passengers an hour. In the period that followed, four more terminals were built, which together could handle an annual capacity of 2 million passengers.

In 1995 the government decided to bundle the handling in a single building and decided to build an efficient passenger building. Today's Terminal 1 was opened five years later. The building is supposed to symbolize a lotus flower .

At the beginning of 2006, the new, four-kilometer, southern slope was inaugurated. At the end of 2006 the old passenger boarding bridges were replaced by new, glass ones and some were added. A new catering building and a freight terminal were added later.

Noi Bai International Airport Terminal 2 was opened in December 2014. It is about 1 km west of Terminal 1. Since then, international passenger traffic has been handled through this terminal.

The airport area is around 1000 hectares. The airport is located 20 kilometers north of Hanover city center near the city of Thach Loi .

The two runways run in an east-west direction. The two slopes are 3800 and 4000 meters long and 60 meters wide. They are separated from each other by a 188 meter wide strip of grass. There are five taxiways to and from the northern runway, two of which are rapid taxiways at a 30 ° angle. The southern runway is also crossed by five taxiways, some of which lead to the northern runway.

The military facilities are now north of the two slopes. The civil part of the airport extends south of the runways. There is a full-length taxiway south of the two slopes. To the north of the slopes there is a small taxiway that can only be rolled over by small planes.

A motorway-like expressway runs alongside the passenger handling building (Terminal 1).

There are some bowl-shaped fighter aircraft shelters to the northwest. South of the runways from west to east are the passenger building, the tower, the building for state receptions and two hangars.

National passenger handling building (Terminal 1)

The planning for a new, large passenger terminal building was started in 1995, because all handling activities were wanted under one roof. In addition, the other terminal buildings were no longer up to date.

The new building went into operation in 2000. The building is equipped with five passenger boarding bridges and is 90,000 m² in size. It can handle up to 4000 passengers per hour.

The triangular building consists of five levels and is supposed to symbolize a lotus flower. There is a central body of the building from which three wings branch off. One of these wings of the building has gates on both sides, the other two wings of the building only have gates on one side, as the other half of the building houses the check-in hall. The check-in hall is divided into two parts, named after "A" and "B". The same applies to the baggage claim halls and the associated reception halls.

Incoming passengers are handled on the lowest level. Here are passport control, baggage claim belts , customs control , money exchange agencies, tour operators, hotel operator, etc.

The second level only exists on the sides of the building facing the apron. Its sole purpose is to guide the arriving passengers from the passenger boarding bridges / piers to the escalators that lead to passport control.

The third level houses the handling facilities for departing passengers. There are around 50 check-in counters , counters for airport fees, passport control, waiting lounges at the boarding gates and the surrounding shops, restaurants, cafes and airline lounges.

The fourth level has not yet been fully used and is currently under renovation (status: end of 2006). The floor does not exist above the check-in hall. The fourth level is intended for further catering and consumer facilities, which are currently only sparsely available there. The level is divided into two zones. One is only available to passengers who have already passed passport control. This part can be reached via stairs in the middle of the central wing of the building. The other part is open to the public and can be reached via two flight of stairs from the check-in hall.

The fifth level only exists in the central part of the building and can be reached through the glass elevators that connect all levels.

The side of the central building towards the street entrance has a glass roof through which light can penetrate into the third level.

Under the glass roof , in the central building, escalators and panoramic glass elevators connect the first and third levels.

Departing passengers who want to board a domestic flight have to go through two entrances at the ends of each check-in hall after check-in. Passengers flying internationally go through the entrance in the central building. You are screened at these entrances. International passengers also have to pass through passport control. Behind the controls are halls with seating groups in the middle, which are surrounded by a large number of shops. You do not go to the gates until the flight has been announced. Originally only four of the gates were equipped with passenger boarding bridges. After the renovation of the passenger boarding bridges, even more boarding gates will be equipped with these passenger bridges.

There is road access on both the lowest and the third level.

The roof is supported by a bracing technique consisting of many blue poles in a triangular formation.

The tapering roofs protrude far beyond the building's boundaries. The roof gable has been replaced by a glass dome, through which light constantly penetrates into the interior of the building.

International passenger terminal (Terminal 2)

Terminal 2, which opened in December 2014, is about 1 km west of Terminal 1. International passenger traffic is handled via Terminal 2.

The resident Vietnamese airlines Vietnam Airlines , VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific are responsible for the majority of flights at Hanoi Airport . You operate a dense domestic route network. Vietnam Airlines flies to all major metropolises in East and Southeast Asia and also operates three routes to Europe . Boeing 787s take off several times a week to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris , Heathrow Airport in London and Frankfurt Airport .

European airlines that serve the airport are Turkish Airlines , the Russian airline Aeroflot and Air France .

The airport is served by all major airlines in the Southeast Asian and East Asian region several times a week. These airlines mainly use Boeing 737s (including Malaysia Airlines ) or widebodies such as the Airbus 330 (including Thai Airways , Eva Air ) or Boeing 777 (including Singapore Airlines , Korean Air ).

City bus number 7 (direction: Kim Ma) connects the airport with Hanoi's city center (approx. 27 km) between approx. 05:00 and 22:00 every 15 to 20 minutes. The travel time is up to an hour. The city bus no. 17, which used to go to the airport, no longer goes to the airport, but only about 2 km to the airport. The information on bus no. 17 on the English website is outdated (as of April 2015).

The bus stop is to the right of the exit on the arrivals level (Terminal 1).
