history

Vietnam Civil Aviation Department (1956–1993)

Vietnam Airlines was founded in 1956 under the name Vietnam Civil Aviation Department as the national airline of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The airline started operations in September 1956 with five Russian-type aircraft. In 1976 she started her second international route to Vientiane ( Laos ), followed in 1978 by another line to Bangkok . By the late 1970s, the Vietnamese airline had started regular services to Laos, Cambodia and China and flew charter flights to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

In 1993 the "Vietnam Civil Aviation Department" was restructured into Vietnam Airlines. Since then it has been considered the official flag carrier of the state of Vietnam, and the name "Vietnam Civil Aviation Department" disappeared from the market. In the same year the airline received its first Airbus A320 and a Boeing 767-300ER from Air France . Just a year after the airline's restructuring, Vietnam Airlines launched its first long haul to Paris, which was flown on the Boeing 767. In 1996, Vietnam Airlines Corporation was officially established, which consists of Vietnam Airlines and around 20 flight-related businesses.

The airline's expansion and modernization is being systematically advanced. In 1999 Vietnam Airlines introduced the frequent flyer program called Golden Lotus Plus (now LotusMiles ), and in 2000 an automatic check-in system. In 2002 it got a new corporate identity with a lotus flower logo. In 2003 Vietnam Airlines' long-haul fleet was expanded with new Boeing 777-200ERs . Vietnam Airlines has been flying from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Frankfurt since 2004, since 2005 non-stop without a stopover in Moscow, six times a week since October 2009 and daily since November 2010.

The number of passengers increases accordingly every year. In 2000, 2,853,714 passengers flew with Vietnam Airlines. In the following years, 3,458,504 (2001), 4,070,303 (2002) and 4,077,000 (2003) were counted until the five million mark was broken in 2004 (5,040,000). After that, the number of passengers grew annually by almost one million passengers. In 2005 there were six million, in 2006 6.8 million, in 2007 eight million and in 2008 8.8 million.

In August 2009 Vietnam Airlines founded the airline Cambodia Angkor Air together with the government of Cambodia . With a fleet of initially three ATR 72-500 and one Airbus A321-200 , it connects Siem Reap , Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City . In November of the same year, Vietnam Airlines signed a letter of intent to order four Airbus A380-800s , but the firm order no longer took place.

In June 2010, Vietnam Airlines joined the SkyTeam airline alliance .

On January 12, 2016, Vietnam Airlines and the Japanese ANA Holdings signed a letter of intent for a cooperation between the two companies and an 8.8 percent strategic stake by ANA Holdings in Vietnam Airlines. As a result, ANA Holdings took over 8.8 percent of the shares in Vietnam Airlines in July 2016, and on October 30, 2016, the latter put into effect a 35-route codeshare agreement with All Nippon Airways . In addition, a board member of ANA Holdings joined the board of Vietnam Airlines on February 23, 2017.
