After the war, the operations of the was allied initially prohibited. In 1950 flight operations could be resumed. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, however, it became extremely difficult to maintain flight operations as it was subject to strict restrictions in order to prevent people from fleeing the republic . In 1979 the square was finally closed. The Finsterwalder pilots did not want to give up the place and continued to maintain the area. Shortly before these activities could also be stopped, former pilots came up with the idea of founding a museum and exhibiting historical flight technology in the former aircraft hangar in order to preserve the site. In 1987 the museum was opened. After the fall of the Wall , the operators were given the choice of keeping the museum or returning active aircraft to the hangar. In 1990 the airfield was reopened by the Otto Lilienthal Aviation Association.
