The Fossombroniaceae are a family of liverworts , they form their own order Fossombroniales in the class of Fossombroniopsida .
features
The gametophytes are thalless and have a midrib attached to them: either upright lamellae ( petalophyllum ) running to the edge of the thallus or two rows of lateral leaf lobes ( fossombronia ). This structure is similar to that of the Jungermanniidae. However, the gametangia are formed on the midrib, which is why the “leaves” are interpreted as slashed thallus wings.
The perichaetium (thallus overgrowth around the gametangia stands ) is cup-shaped or bell-shaped. The kalyptra is shorter than the perichaetium. The capsule is spherical. When ripe, the two-layer capsule wall breaks down from the tip into irregular pieces. The spores have irregular ridges or are prickly.
Systematics
External system
The structure of the connection between the sporophyte and gametophyte differs from that of the Jungermanniopsida. In addition, the antheridia and archegonia stand in a simple acropetal sequence on the upper side of the thallus axis. The capsules have no flaps.
Internal system
The Fossombroniaceae consist of two genera with around 90 species:
