Frank Überall (born April 15, 1971 in Leverkusen ) is a German political scientist , journalist and author . Since November 2015 he has been chairman of the German Association of Journalists (DJV).

Life

Growing up in Cologne , where he also lives, Überall has worked as a freelance journalist in the field of radio, television and other media since his master's degree in political science at the University of Cologne . Among other things, he works regularly for the WDR (e.g. the television magazine Monitor ), for the daily newspaper (taz). He used to work for the dpa news agency . He is the author / co-author of several political non-fiction books. His first book publications were made in collaboration with Pascal Beucker , a correspondent for the taz. At the end of 2007 he did his doctorate at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen under Hans-Georg Wehling as a political scientist on the clique in the political culture of Cologne .

He does not equate Klüngel with corruption , but also emphasizes the positive effects of "situational cooperation" and networking . At the same time, he calls for stricter rules for politicians to prevent corruption. In his “ethics of corruption” approach, he offers explanatory models for illegitimate and illegal behavior.

Since October 2012, Überall has been a professor at the University for Media, Communication and Economics (HMKW) in Cologne. There he teaches journalism and politics / sociology. Since November 2015, Überall has been the federal chairman of the German Association of Journalists (DJV). Since May 2017 he has been a member of the writers' association PEN Center Germany .

He is the founding chairman of the New Society for Journalistic Educational Work, the sponsor of the Journalist Center Herne , which will take up further training on January 1, 2020 as the successor to the Journalist Center Haus Busch (Hagen) .

In 2019, he called the Russian state foreign media RT Deutsch and Sputnik “Kremlin propaganda instruments” and demanded that RT Deutsch should not be granted a broadcasting license.

Everywhere is a member of the CDU . In the context of the debate about the EU copyright reform , he was therefore accused of having a conflict of interests.

Everywhere's attitude towards the separation of journalism and PR met with criticism. Compared to the media magazine of the NDR Zapp , he explained in 2019 "What is done in PR , i.e. in effective press and public relations work, is a variety of journalism." The Hamburg journalism professor Volker Lilienthal criticized Everywhere's statement that it basically assume an "assimilation of journalism and PR".
