Frank Siegmund (born September 25, 1956 in Wegberg , Heinsberg district ) is a German prehistoric scientist .

Life

Frank Siegmund studied prehistory, geology and classical archeology at the Universities of Cologne and Mainz . He received his doctorate in 1989 - supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation - with Gernot Jacob-Friesen in Cologne on the basis of his thesis "Franconian finds from the German Lower Rhine and the northern Cologne Bight" . For this study he was awarded the Albert Steeger Prize of the Rhineland Regional Council in 1992 . At the University of Göttingen he completed his habilitation in 1996 on “Alemannen und Franken. Archaeological study of ethnic groups and their settlement areas in the Merovingian period ” .

From 1990 to 1999 he worked at the University of Göttingen, most recently as a private lecturer. In 1996 he represented the vacant professorship for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Bamberg . From 1999 to 2011 he was Professor of Younger Prehistory and Early History and Provincial Roman Archeology at the University of Basel . He works as a research assistant at the University of Düsseldorf and teaches at the University of Münster .

Research priorities

Siegmund's main research focus lies in the early Middle Ages, where he publishes sources and researches typology and chronology; During the historical analysis of this epoch, he mainly researched social issues and the ethnic groups "Alemanni" , "Franconians" , "Thuringians" and "Saxons" . Other studies focused on the Neolithic ( earthworks ), flint mining in Kleinkems ( Isteiner Klotz ), the Roman Empire ( Costedt ), physical anthropology and, in particular, diachronic issues such as the development of height and living standards since the Neolithic.

Political engagement and editorial work

Frank Siegmund has been Deputy Chairman of the German Society for Pre- and Protohistory since 2013 . From 2001 to 2005 Frank Siegmund was chairman of this society, then a member of the scientific advisory board.

Siegmund was the editor of the four times Basler Hefte zur Archäologie (2002–2008) and several compilations. Since 2012 he has been the chief editor and editor of the journal Archäologische Informations , since 2017 also chief editor of the monograph series Archäologische reports und Archäologische Quellen .
