history

Wegberg was first mentioned under the name Berck in a certificate from Emperor Otto I from 966. At that time the place belonged to the Mühlgau . The current name Wegberg originated around the 14th century and is explained by the location of the place on an old military road that crossed the Schwalm here.

For centuries, the border between the duchies of Geldern and Jülich ran through the middle of Wegberg, along the Schwalm between Mühlenbach and Beeckbach .

Wegberg's jury seal at the beginning of the 17th century with the inscription: Gelrischer Scheffen-Segel zu Wegberck . In the middle, the seal shows the parish patron St. Peter, a cross (probably with reference to the Kreuzherrenkloster) and apparently bread (weck).

From 1543 to 1794 the former Geldrische Wegberg, which was in the upper district of Roermond , belonged to the Habsburg Netherlands . Since 1713 the city was in the Austrian money .

The Jülich part of Wegberg was under the rule of Tüschenbroich, which as a Wassenberg fief had belonged to the Barons of Spiering from 1624. In 1639 Franz v. Spiering gave the patronage to the Wegberg-based church of the Order of the Cross , which had founded a monastery in the village.

In 1794 French revolutionary troops conquered the left bank of the Rhine . In 1797, in the Peace of Campo Formio , the Habsburg emperor renounced his areas on the left bank of the Rhine, which now belonged to France under international law . The former Geldrische Wegberg was now in the canton of Cruchten (today Niederkrüchten ), Département Meuse-Inférieure (Niedermaas).

After 1794, Wegberg in Jülich was combined with Tüschenbroich to form one municipality. This became an official part of France through the Peace of Lunéville in 1801 and was located in the canton of Erkelenz, Département de la Roer . In 1815 both districts came to Prussia , district of Erkelenz . In 1820 it was merged into the mayor's office in Wegberg.

In 1937, the Wegberg community had a new town hall built by the architect Heinrich Bartmann .

The municipality Wegberg was granted city rights on June 5, 1973.

Incorporations

The municipal area was expanded on January 1, 1972 through the municipal reorganization . The municipalities of Arsbeck and Wildenrath were dissolved and Wegberg was added, and the village of Merbeck of the municipality of Niederkrüchten was added .

Outsourcing

On January 1, 1972, the place Geneiken was assigned to the city of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district .

On January 1, 1975, Wegberg ceded an area of eleven hectares with 139 inhabitants at that time (Buchholz district) to the city of Mönchengladbach.

Religions

Parish church of St. Peter and Paul with the former Kreuzherren monastery at Christmas time

The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was in the Jülischen part of Wegberg. The parish also extended to the Geldrischen part of the place. In the 16th century the Barons von Spiering had the right of patronage over the church. In 1639 Franz von Spiering transferred the collage to the Order of the Cross , who built a monastery in Wegberg by 1675. In 1802 it was abolished by the French and in 1956 it was repopulated by Dutch religious of the Carmelite Order . They took over the care of the parish of St. Peter and Paul as well as other parishes in the vicinity. After the last two monks left the monastery in 2004, it was formally abolished in 2011. Since January 1st 2013 there is only one Catholic parish in Wegberg. By order of the Aachen bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff, the previous 10 parishes in the city area have merged to form the St. Martin parish. These were: St. Adelgundis Arsbeck, St. Vincentius Beeck, St. Rochus Dalheim, Heilige Familie Klinkum, St. Maternus Merbeck, St. Rochus Rath-Anhoven, St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Rickelrath, Heilig Geist Tüschenbroich, St. Peter and Paul Wegberg and St. Johann Baptist Wildenrath.

Millstone icon
Ev. Friedenskirche

The millstone in front of the parish church, inaugurated in June 2014, is the unifying symbol for the new large parish: just as St. Martin parted the cloak to secure the life of the beggar, the millstone ensures the survival of the people by grinding grain into flour People. The 20 stars around the St. Martin seal are reminiscent of the former parishes and chapel parishes of the parish. The millstone and the symbol for the parish of St. Martin Wegberg were designed by designer Michael Körner.

Evangelical Christians, often called "Protestants" in Wegberg, were a small minority until World War II, around 1% of the population. In the years that followed, this changed significantly with the influx of mainly evangelical refugees from the East. The proportion of evangelicals grew to around 10%. The Friedenskirche was therefore built for them in 1952/53 on the church grounds on Martin-Luther-Str., A gift from Wegberg. Wegberg's Protestant Christians belonged to the Schwanenberg Protestant parish until 1967 . Since then they have been the independent Evangelical Church Community in Wegberg. A rectory, a parish hall and a youth home have now been added to the area around the church.

A loaf of bread can also be seen to the left of the cross.

Description of the flag: “The flag of the city of Wegberg shows the colors blue and white; it bears the city arms or the emblems of the city arms in the middle. "

Memorial stone for the persecuted and victims of National Socialism

A project group with students from the Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium under the direction of the history teacher Jürgen Tenbrock dealt with the time of National Socialism in Wegberg. “Brown Wegberg? We didn't have anything like that ... Or was it? ”Is the title of a book that the project group published in 2012. Two years later, the laying of a memorial plaque for the persecuted and victims of National Socialism on the Rathausplatz marked the end of the project. The book and the commemorative plaque were designed by Wegberg artist Michael Körner.

The inscription reads:
The memorial stone

WHAT WILL I DO Dedicated to
the persecuted and victims of National Socialism
May they never forget his

In the vicinity of the Wegberger Mühle and the town pond, the Schwalm Association is expanding the Schwalm into a world of adventure. The aim is to turn the natural course of the river through a wide river bed and flat banks into a new habitat for flora and fauna .

The “Schwalm Water Experience” nature park has been set up just a few kilometers from the Schwalm spring. The newly created water landscape is located in the city park and connects to the central shopping streets and the Wegberger mill. The joint project has now been presented to the public.

NABU nature conservation station

NABU nature conservation station Haus Wildenrath

In the Wildenrath district, in the middle of the “Schaagbachtal” nature reserve, is the NABU Haus Wildenrath nature conservation station , an old farm complex that has been the seat of the biological station in the Heinsberg district since 2003 - the NABU Haus Wildenrath e. V. - is. The former agricultural yard was probably built in the first half of the 19th century. Today it consists of the house, an old barn and a goat shed, a seminar building and ancillary buildings.

The main concern of NABU and its nature conservation station is to preserve a biodiverse landscape for the benefit of people, animals and plants. The NABU nature conservation station currently employs three full-time employees who are supported by volunteers . The main focus of the station's work is the recording of endangered animal and plant species, the coordination of the wild hamster species aid program in North Rhine-Westphalia, the development of protection, care and development concepts for nature reserves as well as nature conservation education through lectures, hikes and special events. Old domestic animal breeds such as Glan cattle and Moorschnucken are kept in the pastures around Haus Wildenrath . Most of the forest around Haus Wildenrath has not been used for forestry for decades, so that it is developing back into an original forest.

Several hiking trails are signposted in the grounds of the SchwalmNette Nature Park. In 1968 a nature trail was set up. The NABU nature conservation station offers excursions and lectures on various topics in the field of nature and the environment.

Sports

Wegberg offers many opportunities to practice sports. Mention should be made of the indoor pool , which is used by the Wegberg schools, among others. By winning the Middle Rhine Cup , the soccer club FC Wegberg-Beeck was able to take part in the DFB Cup in 2008 . There are also two other football clubs in Wegberg, SC Wegberg and Viktoria Wegberg . Furthermore, in Wegberg are the gymnastics and sports club (TuS Wegberg) founded in 1900 , a table tennis club (TTC Wegberg e.V.), a handball club (HSV Wegberg), a tennis club (TC Wegberg), two golf clubs with 18 holes Places as well as a Budo Club (BC Wegberg) and the Wing Tsiun Academy International . An offer for the older generation is the Seniorensport 1974 eV Wegberg.

An established Nordic Walking Park leads over seven routes with a total length of 41 kilometers over forest and meadow paths. The route lengths are tailored to different levels of difficulty. All routes are color-coded and signposted.

Wegberg is connected to the cycling network in North Rhine-Westphalia and also linked to the junction system of the neighboring Netherlands and Belgium .

dialect

The dialect spoken in Wegberg - almost only by the older generation - is Southern Lower Franconian. It is a language area that is roughly localized by the cities of Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and Heinsberg.

The emergence of the dialects goes back to the time of the "Franconian conquest" from the 5th to the 8th century. In the course of history there have been several changes in the use of different sounds. A "first sound shift" took place between 500 BC. And the turning point. A "second sound shift" followed between the 7th and 14th centuries. Lines of language emerged where these developments came to a standstill. In the south of our southern Lower Franconian language area, it is the "Benrath Line", as opposed to the Ripuarian / Cologne area. It is also called the pt k or make line. For many words p had become f / ff or pf (Schi'ep> Scheff), t had changed to ss / ß or z / tz (Tiit> Zikk) and k had changed to ch (Buuk> Buuch ). The boundary to the North Lower Franconian / Kleverland is the "Ürdinger Line". There z. B. ech> ek and ooch> ok changed.

There are, in turn, a large number of local dialects within these areas. Inhospitable stretches of land between the settlement areas had a barrier-forming effect, so that little exchange took place. Church and political borders have also led to different language developments. One such administrative barrier in Wegberg was the border between the Geldrian and Jülich parts that ran through the middle of the village from 1543 to 1794.

The use and knowledge of the native dialect are declining more and more. The historical association Wegberg has set itself the goal of upgrading and maintaining the cultural property of Platt with the “Klängerstu'ef”. The name is reminiscent of the "good old days", when neighbors met in the "parlor" at the end of the day to talk about "God and the world", to "chant". Every month, citizens interested in receiving the “Modderschpro'ek” meet in the Wegberger “Klängerstu'ef”. Low German poems and songs are sung in a cozy atmosphere by a management team and also by visitors.

Economy and Infrastructure

Road transport, rail transport and public transport

Wegberg station

Wegberg is connected to the supraregional transport network through federal highways 57 and 221 , which intersect the city to the east and west, and various country roads.

There are bus connections to the individual districts and neighboring towns .

Wegberg lies on the Iron Rhine , which is currently served by VIAS on the Schwalm-Nette railway (RB 34) with LINT 41 railcars every hour. The stretch between Dalheim and Roermond in the Netherlands is currently not used, but should be reactivated. However, this is controversial: Beyond the border, the focus is on nature conservation (the route runs through De Meinweg National Park ); in this country there is discussion about new routes and noise pollution.

In the city of Wegberg there are three stations: the Dalheim Bahnhof , the breakpoint Arsbeck and Wegberg station . Thus Wegberg is the city with the most stations in the Heinsberg district. At the block point in Klinkum, the branch line to the railway testing center and a connecting railway to the former RAF Brüggen military airfield branches off. The railway testing center in Wegberg-Wildenrath is also of major economic importance for the city.

The Grenzlandring

The Grenzlandring is now a bypass around Wegberg

Around the city of Wegberg, the Grenzlandring, a nine-kilometer-long, oval-shaped ring road, which was built before the start of the Second World War at a cost of around 3.3 million Reichsmarks for the campaign in the west , runs around the town . In this former concrete - oval course with minimal banked curves big car and motorcycle races were held in front of up to 300,000 spectators five from 1948 to 1952, until August 31, 1952, an accident in which a total of at least 13 dead (some sources speak of 14 dead ) and 42 injured came. The Berlin Helmut Niedermayr came exit of the Roermonder curve with his Formula 2 - racing cars from never clarified reasons with nearly 200 km / h above the track and crossed the completely unprotected spectators. Immediately afterwards, the Grenzlandring was closed to all further racing activities. Even later, the Grenzlandring was never used again for motorsport and its tragic sporting history was largely forgotten. Nowadays it is asphalted and, after various modifications in the curves, no longer presents itself to road users as a closed ring road. To mark the 60th anniversary of the accident, a memorial stone was erected at the accident site on August 31, 2012 by the Wegberg Historical Society, commemorating the 13 officially known fatalities.
