history

People have settled in the area around Beeck since the younger Stone Age, this has been proven by individual prehistoric finds. The origins of the closed village of Beeck are said to go back to a “royal court”, which usually means a ruling travel destination. However, this has not been proven. A knightly seat, which was established in the late High Middle Ages near the town center with a two-part moth, was mentioned in a document in 1279. The moth hill, partially excavated in the 1930s, can be seen near the church tower of St. Vincentius. The gate wing of the outer bailey still exists from the successor building "Haus Beeck" from the Baroque period, always in private hands.

In the course of its history, Beeck had different masters, and the street Spanische Kall still reminds of the centuries-old border between Geldern and Jülich. As a fief, it went first to the Wassenberg lordship around 1020 , later to the Duke of Limburg , and in 1288 to the court of Brabant . In 1472, Beeck moved to Jülich through marriage . From this time of Jülich rule, the community of Beeck bears its coat of arms , which in the upper part has the upper body of a black lion facing to the left on a golden background. At the turn of the 19th century it was under French rule and fell to Prussia after the Congress of Vienna in the spring of 1815. The Prussian administration established the mayor's office in Beeck in 1816, which was assigned to the district of Erkelenz . Some buildings from this period in the classicist style are striking and defining the appearance of the town .

The former Wegberg fine spinning mill in 2009

In 1912, Ferdinand Bernard Bartmann founded the Wegberg fine spinning mill , which employed up to 500 people and existed until 1993. On October 1, 1935, the administrative independence of the civil parish was revoked and Beeck became part of the Wegberg community . Today Beeck is a district of Wegberg.

religion

The Catholic church in the center is dedicated to St. Vincentius and was built in 1401. An extension with the new main nave and choir was completed in 1966 in place of the old school. With the reorganization of the parishes in the Diocese of Aachen , the parish was dissolved on December 31, 2012 and incorporated as a subsidiary parish of the new parish of St. Martin Wegberg on January 1, 2013 .

Infrastructure

In June 2011 there were 2,433 people living in Beeck. There is a doctor, ophthalmologist and a dentist's practice. Several bus stops provide connections to Wegberg, Erkelenz and Mönchengladbach.
