life and career

Franz Hohler (2008)

Franz Hohler grew up in Olten and attended the Aarau Cantonal School until he graduated in 1963. Then he began studying German and Romance languages at the University of Zurich . He was declared unfit for duty by the military, which he said he was "not unhappy" about. During his studies he performed his first solo program pizzicato (1965). Its success encouraged him to drop out and devote himself entirely to art. His work includes cabaret programs, plays, film and television productions, children's books, short stories, novels and poems.

He repeatedly worked with other artists, for example on stage and on television with the pantomime René Quellet , with Hanns Dieter Hüsch and Emil Steinberger .

The alternation between political engagement and pure love of storytelling is characteristic of Hohler's work. Often he also starts from fine everyday observations that suddenly tip into the absurd. Like the German cabaret artist Matthias Deutschmann, Hohler often accompanies himself on the cello ( cello ballads ) during his performances .

He has been married to the psychologist Ursula Nagel since 1968 and has two sons. He lives in Zurich-Oerlikon .

Hohler was President of the Prix Courage Jury from 2005 to 2009 . He is a member of the Association of Authors of Switzerland and the International PEN .
