Franz Adolf Friedrich Schober , from 1801 von Schober (born May 17, 1796 at Torup Castle near Malmö , Sweden ; † September 13, 1882 in Dresden ) was an Austrian poet , librettist and lithographer as well as an actor in Breslau and a councilor in Weimar .

Life

Franz Schober was born to Austrian parents in Sweden, as his father was an estate manager in Schonen (Skåne) at the time. In 1801 the family was raised to the Austrian nobility. The father died on February 8, 1802. Schober's mother, Katharina b. Derffel (* 1762 in Baden near Vienna; † 1833 in Vienna) returned to Austria with Franz and his three older siblings Axel († 1817), Ludovica († 1812) and Sophie († 1825) - whose exact dates of birth are not yet known back.

From 1803 Schober was educated in the Salzmann School in Schnepfenthal . From 1806 he lived in Austria, attended the Vienna Academic Gymnasium and from 1808 the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster . From 1815 he lived in Vienna again . There he first took up a degree in philosophy at the university , but did not complete it.

While still in Upper Austria he made friends with the von Spaun siblings , in Vienna also with Johann Mayrhofer , Johann Chrysostomus Senn , Leopold Kupelwieser , Franz von Bruchmann, Franz Schubert , Moritz von Schwind , Eduard von Bauernfeld and Ernst von Feuchtersleben and later with their Vienna -Stays u. a. with Ottilie von Goethe and her children, so with Walther von Goethe .

Even at the time of his later broken engagement to Franz von Bruchmann's sister Justina, Schober performed in Breslau from 1823 to 1825 - during his engagement with Gottlob Benedict Bierey as an actor under the pseudonym "Torupson" - not only u. a. with Richard Wagner's older siblings Albert and Luise and Heinrich Schmelka on stage, but also came into lively contact with the journalist Karl Schall as well as with Johann Theodor Mosewius , Karl Witte and Antonio Mayer from the circle of Carl von Holtei and Eugen von Vaerst . Also in Breslau he was idolized by Ferdinand Esslair's daughter Hedwig and Marie, the wife of the (glass) painter Albert Höcker.

From 1826 to 1829 Schober headed the Lithography Institute in Vienna. He was a partner and educator in the family of Leo Graf Festetics in Tolna , Hungary , travel companion of Franz Liszt and initiated that the frescoes in the Wartburg were designed by Schwind. From 1856 he was married to the youthful writer Thekla von Gumpert , but from 1860 he was separated again.

Schober's estate, which is distributed among various collections in Vienna, Hamburg and Weimar, is one of the most important sources for the biography of Franz Schubert and Moritz von Schwind. He was in constant contact with their first biographers Heinrich Kreißle von Hellborn and Hyacinth Holland since 1861 and 1871 respectively.

Poems set to music

Schober wrote numerous poems, some of which were set to music by Schubert - including An die Musik and Jäger's Liebeslied - as well as the libretto for Schubert's opera Alfonso and Estrella in 1821 . Liszt and other composers also set texts by him to music.
