The Salzmannschule is a state special grammar school for languages and is located in Schnepfenthal , a district of Waltershausen ( Thuringia ).

history

On March 4, 1784, Christian Gotthilf Salzmann came to Schnepfenthal to found an educational institution based on the principles of philanthropism . The school was initially called " Philanthropin Schnepfenthal". The students came from all parts of Germany. In addition to the usual subjects, there was physical education and practical work. Some of the sports equipment can still be seen and is used every year on festive occasions by the "traditional gymnasts". Well-known students were Johann Matthäus Bechstein , Carl Ritter , Carl André and Franz von Schober . The most famous teacher was probably Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths , who made a special contribution to the development of sports and geography lessons. The graves of the founders and many teachers can be seen in the nearby forest cemetery.

Near the Schnepfenthal sports field, in the forest, is the historic gymnastics area created by Salzmann and co-designed by GutsMuths, where members of the school working group “traditional gymnastics” train and, on special occasions, also perform in historical costume (white trousers, red jersey).

Since 2001, on the occasion of the anniversary of the "European Day of Languages", which was already an extended secondary school with extended foreign language lessons ( English , French , Russian , Italian ) with an attached boarding school in the GDR and during the reunification , the school has been a special high school for languages (with boarding school).

There is a Freundeskreis Salzmannschule eV that maintains the school's traditions. A school support association was founded in February 2015 .
