The Franziskanergymnasium Bolzano is a state-recognized humanistic grammar school with middle school run by the Bolzano Franciscans , located in the old town of Bolzano in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

history

With a court decree of October 20, 1780, Maria Theresa built a grammar school in Bolzano at the request of the city government . The Franciscans took over the management and instruction at the school, which was housed in the so-called "Castiolhaus". During the Bavarian rule in Tyrol from 1810 to 1815, the grammar school was converted into a secondary school and the Franciscans were relieved of their teaching activities. Due to a lack of space, a new school building was built in the nearby Weggensteinstrasse from 1853 to 1855.

When the school was nationalized again during the years of the Kulturkampf , the Tyrolean Franciscan Province founded its own private high school in Bolzano in 1872, which soon also received public rights. Under the director and well-known naturalist P. Vinzenz Maria Gredler , the new school building was built in 1882 according to a design by the Bozen city architect Sebastian Altmann , which is structurally connected to the Franciscan monastery; the building was extended by master builder Johann Bittner. In the war years 1943–1945 the grammar school was closed. Due to the decline in the number of members of the Order, the majority of the teaching staff today consists of lay people . Up until the 1989/90 school year, only boys were taught in the grammar school. Since then, girls have also been admitted to school. Wolfgang Malsiner has been the director since 1995; he is the first layperson in this position. From 2002 to 2005 the grammar school was rebuilt and a new, underground gymnasium was built.
