Egon Kühebacher

Egon Kühebacher (* 1934 in Innichen , South Tyrol , Italy ) is a South Tyrolean linguist , historian and Germanist .

Life

After attending the Vinzentinum in Brixen and at the Franziskanergymnasium in Bozen , Kühebacher studied German, comparative linguistics, history, art history and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck . In 1959 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Pustertal dialects. He was then a lecturer at Innsbruck University until 1964, employee of the Institute of German Language Atlas in Marburg an der Lahn until 1967, of the South Tyrolean Cultural Institute until 1973 and of the South Tyrolean State Archives until his retirement in 1998 .

Kühebacher is the author of the Tyrolean Language Atlas and numerous other scientific publications on dialect geographic , linguistic history , naming , historical, folklore and theater studies topics.

From 1969 to 1981 Kühebacher was also chairman of the Association of South Tyrolean Volksbühnen (today the South Tyrolean Theater Association). For his services he was awarded the Cross of Merit in 1981 and the Medal of Honor of the State of Tyrol in 1984 . He set up the museum of Innichen Abbey and opened up the important abbey archive. In 1998 he was awarded the Walther von der Vogelweide Prize .
