The South Tyrolean Provincial Archives (SLA) is a public archive of the Province of South Tyrol ( Italy ) and is located in Bolzano . It forms an office of the South Tyrolean provincial administration and is part of the monument preservation department. The holdings come from South Tyrol based on provenance , but also include archival materials from the former Crown Land of Tyrol , which, in addition to the current state of Tyrol, also concern Trentino . The South Tyrolean Provincial Archive also conducts archival and historical basic research , promotes the publication of the “ Tyrolean Document Book ”, supports the South Tyrolean chronicler system and publishes its own series of publications under the title “Publications of the South Tyrolean Provincial Archives”.

The establishment of an independent South Tyrolean provincial archive was the result of the autonomy legislation, which since 1972 granted the province of South Tyrol special rights within the Italian state structure, including in the cultural field. In this context, the Provincial Archives took over important old holdings from the Bolzano State Archives , including the property tax cadastre and the specialist books from South Tyrolean provenance, various municipal archives, the files of the Bolzano and Merano aristocratic archives, the archive of the mercantile magistrate Bolzano and the archive of the Bolzano Heiliggeistspital. Numerous aristocratic archives, including Künigl , Oberpayrsberg , Schlandersberg , Welsberg and Wolkenstein , have since significantly supplemented and expanded the holdings. The Codex Brandis from the 16th century is one of the most valuable archival materials .

The provincial archive also helps the offices and departments of the South Tyrolean provincial administration to manage their own archives; Historically relevant files are also determined, which are handed over to the State Archives after the retention period has expired (usually 10 years). In relation to the smaller archives in South Tyrol, the Provincial Archives have a duty of control and supervision in accordance with Provincial Archives Act No. 17 of 1985 ("Regulating the archives and establishing the South Tyrolean Provincial Archives").

Since 2013, the state archive has maintained a close cooperation with the Tyrolean History Association , on whose board it is permanently represented and which has a workplace in the state archive.

In 2018, the historian Rolf Steininger made serious allegations against the archive for withholding essential source material for his research.
