Franzjosef Maier
Franzjosef Maier (born April 27, 1925 in Memmingen ; † October 16, 2014 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German violinist , conductor and university professor .
Live and act
Franzjosef Maier learned the piano, violin and viola at an early age. From 1938 he attended the Augsburg Conservatory, then the Munich Academy and finally from 1940 to 1944 he was at the musical high school in Frankfurt with Wilhelm Isselmann (1902–1987) and Kurt Thomas . Immediately after the end of the war and imprisonment, he studied from 1946 to 1948 at the Cologne University of Music , including composition with Philipp Jarnach . In 1948 he was a co-founder of the Collegium Musicum for early music of the NWDR . At the same time he played in various chamber ensembles, for example as 2nd violinist in the Schäffer Quartetwith whom he recorded all Mozart and Beethoven quartets.
From 1949 to 1959 he taught at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf. From 1959 to 1992 Maier was professor of violin at the Cologne University of Music. In 1964 he set up a studio for early music there, self-taught on the baroque violin .
Influenced by the chamber music group around August Wenzinger and Gustav Scheck , Maier had played a significant role in the development of Cologne's “early music scene” since the early 1950s. His students included well-known baroque violinists such as Reinhard Goebel ( Musica Antiqua Köln ), Werner Ehrhardt ( Concerto Köln , L'arte del mondo), Manfredo Kraemer ( Le concert des Nations and The Rare Fruits Council ), Gustavo Zarba ( Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century ).
In 1964 he took over the leadership of the ensemble Collegium Aureum , founded by the record company Deutsche Harmonia Mundi , as concertmaster , which made groundbreaking recordings for the time in the sense of historical performance practice . Maier opted for the use of original baroque instruments and a style of interpretation appropriate to the respective epoch.
Franzjosef Maier died on October 16, 2014 in Bergisch Gladbach and was buried on October 23, 2014 in the Refrath cemetery, Kippekausen in Bergisch Gladbach.
